do I just need a VGA to HDMI cable or do I need to go through something else.

All I want to do is basically use my tv as a monitor to watch Youtube vids etc.

My notebook is a Acer Aspire and TV is Bush 42" flat screen, both about a year old.

VGA won't carry the sound

Does the tv have a svideo socket if it doesn't have a vga one?

Then you will just need to connect up the sound

your tv should have a vga port so you would just need a vga cable.

Another option might be the apple2 tv for 99gbp

Hook that into your router and hdmi into the tv

No need for your laptop

VGA cable will do it assuming both have a VGA socket on them. Or a HDMI cable. I have both if you want to try before you buy lol.

VGA = Video Graphics Adapter port, from ye oldie worldy computer history!

But yeah if your TV has a VGA port just get a VGA cable. If not, your TV will have HDMI and so need to purchase a VGA to HDMI cable. These usually do not have audio inputs. So you'd need a 3.5mm to 2 phono cable for sound, but it may not come through your tv if you are looking at a hdmi source. depends on the tv.

Failing all that you can get a vga to svideo cable and the above mentioned audio cable.

If you have a home av centre you could route it all through that!

thanks for the responses. I know there are a couple of guys who work with televisions and pc's, and people have made references here in the forums about doing just what I want to do.

I'm certain I'll get the info I need from you people out there in Fabland

Also check your notebook output, sometimes you may actually have a DVI port or an s-video port already, the latter is a little round connector with a few pins in the middle and looks like this:

http://www.coloredhome.com/video/s-video_PC.JPG

and will have sound as well, but the picture won't be that sharp.

You haven't said if sound through the TV is important?

Yes, sound is important. I want to use the free music lessons on Youtube, and also watch old music Youtube vids.

But thanks, your info is very helpfull.
