Tatoos... individuality or "oh it looks pretty"

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

Today i had a message from a user on this site commenting on one of my tattoos, which is absolutely fine, but then they went on to tell me that they may "copy it", which obviously really isn't cool.

This got me thinking.

Are tattoos about individuality and expression, or do people genuinely only get them because they think they look 'nice'?

What are your thoughts?

Oh, o replied to their message and they blocked me lol. I hope they enjoy having a picture of my partner on them if they're stupid enough to do it lol.

It has to be individual for me! I just cringe at those that come back from holiday with an off the shelf one!!

Its a statement of indivduality i would be pissed if some one copyed mine ! but any reptuable artist wouldnt just copy the image they would put there twist on it unless it was a brand pic like a football team crest my artist would never copy someone elses image lke for like i have asked him about this before and he said its not right copying someone elses piece

I like tattoos but I think you should get something unique to you.

I'm not keen on "trendy" tattoos like skull and roses, or koi or something to do with time.

I think both; if I was to get one then getting it because it means something personal to me or just because it looks amazing are good enough reasons.

I suspect that when they said they'd copy you, it was probably the idea and not the actual picture - seeing as there isn't a face picture of your partner on your profile; or did they actually request that you sent them his picture?

They say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery; so be flattered and not miffed.

All my tattoos are Japanese themed, so you could say that in terms of subject matter they're some of the most copied

My tattoos specifically were drawn to fit my body so I guys they're both copied and individual

My earlier ones are book ones, like my Chinese symbol on my leg but everything is else is what I've designed with my tattooist.

I hate seeing copied tattoos, like the idiots that got their hands done because chezza did from the X factor!! My god!! (Yeah ok my first one i got was the same as Ronan keatings but I was very young back then!!!)

The tattoo was on my profile, i have taken it down now. It is a tattoo of one of my pics on here, redrawn by my tattooist. It was a very clear photo.

It is the start of a bondage themed leg sleeve.

Trendy tattoos skulls and roses? Is that sarcasm? Skulls and roses have been tattooed for decades.

All this getting tattooed for a reason or a sob story seemed to come along with Miami Ink, they were just something someone got because they liked it. Think of all the old sailor jerry style tattoos on old blokes, there isn't a back story for each of them.

And even custom designs usually include elements that have been tattooed many times before so how individual are they anymore really when it's more rare to see someone without a bunch of tattoos these days.

Custom tribal

Custom portrait

Custom oriental dragon

Custom flowers

Custom skulls

Custom script

Custom skin ripped open revealing something else

Etc etc

All variations on the same theme.

You don't see many truely individual tattoos. Apart from Rhod Gilbert's.

I just tell the tattoo artist what I'm thinking, then let him do his thing.

All the sob stories and half hour long tales about how the person came to want a tattoo design is just for the dramatics of the tv shows.

Some of mine are just free handed on with a sharpie pen and away we go

Who cares why someone else chooses to get a tattoo? I personally don't care if it is meaningful or not.

When people with tattoos start questioning other people with tattoos because theirs aren't meaningful, well, just seems like being judgmental to me. Kind of like saying "yours isn't as good as mine because mine had meaning."

Given the majority of tattoos are picked out of existing books and templates they aren't really individual.

After all your artist may have your tattoos up as an advert on his wall and already given them to others at request

My artist asked me if she could keep a stretch of my design. I said she could but I'd rather she didn't encourage them to have it all the way up like I do.

Mines unique, by me. I actually wear trousers to some munches as it gets recognised more often than I do

I think anyone else having it done, based on seeing me, would come across as odd

No decent artist would do that, so if it has happened it would reflect on your choice of studio.

Out of my many many tattoos only 2 mean anything to me. The rest of them I just like colourful pics and cool patterns... I don't believe half the back stories about some peoples tattoos anyway its not hard to just invent a story because that's what you think people want to hear!!

My artist is a custom tattooist there are no drawings on the wall or books of sketches. He doesnt buy flash designs. You tell him what you want, he designs it and once its done he throws the drawing away. He takes photos for his portfolio but if somebody wanted something from his photos he would change it in some way not do an exact copy

Lol nope, i deleted the photo. It's one of Mrs GNB tied up.

Pretty 'custom' i think lol.

The girl who tattoos me is a good friend, i know for certain that apart from the one i had done in aid of the charity MIND (which one other person has) none of her work is ever done again.

The Mrs roses are all done freehand too,,so at least they won't be identical to anyone else's lol

Mine is very individual and important to me. I did it for a very personal reason. I would be horrified if anyone else had it done. I was speaking to my tattoo artist the other day, she liked my approach towards the tattoo and the individuality of the design. My next one is being started after the 11th November. It's not in my public images but if any wants a nosey pm me.

In our case we chose individual designs for ourselves.

Yes mine is quite traditional in many ways but it is also totally unique to me. There is no hidden meaning... It is simply designs I like. I am planning a tattoo that has meaning... Just not got it finalised in my head yet

Cal designed his own from scratch,so it is definitely unique to him.

Only 3 months? Wish mine had that little waiting time 6months minimum usually. My artist has no pictures of my sleeve (in progress) for the exact reason of not wanting copy cats. One of mine was designed by a friend so I know no one would ever have the same. I agree with your point entirely, no decent artists would risk their reputation in this way x
