Poorly cat - Can anyone help

Hi everyone

I know I will get funny comments but seriously . .

My one year old cat is unwell, he's very bloated, not hungry and lost weight. The vet says it's gas caused by the wrong food !

Anyone suggest something I can give him to remove the gas please ?

This is a genuine ask for advice

Which food was he on?

Did you change food and mix old with new?

I've only ever dealt with wind and babies so can't help there at all but gentle hugs to puddy cat

Did the vet not give any advice? Kind of only did half the job by sounds of it?

Other than that, sorry, can't help but maybe give the vet a call for further advice!

The vet should be telling you what the best food is. When I had a cat I think there was a brand called Hills Science Food which I used to buy from the vets.

Bloated and losing weight doesn't sound good? Surprised also if you haven't had any constructive advice from your vet.

I would go elsewhere, or see someone else at the practice if you can.

Vet's not done their job properly. Would have thought they would have carried out further tests to ensure nothing more serious. I would get a second opinion if I were you. Hope your cat gets better soon xx

No, never milk. Most cats are lactose intolerant but they like it so will drink it.

In fact cats will rarely stop eating something which they like even if it's causing them problems.

Hit the freezer shop and buy a bag of white fish fillets. Then just zap one in the microwave every time you need one. Dried food is usually much better and hills do one for cats with digestive issues. You can get it from the vet but it's cheaper online.

My cat had similar problems and we put her on Purina sensitive food and she's fine now. She was having regular go cat before.

I'm not a vet obviously but if either of ours have digestive issues we give them this and it helps.

When I had poorly kittens a few years ago our vet said to give them scrambled egg as well as rice and white fish. They played with it like a rubber ball as it was very bouncy

The white fish is a good call. My girl only gets dried food and I buy James Wellbeloved cause it's decent. A bit more expensive but that's okay with me. It's the brand we used to feed our dog and came recommended by the vet.

I'm really surprised the vet hasn't given you proper advice on what food you should use. Definitely no dairy. You can buy car milk from most supermarkets if you can't get to a pet shop. I give her a little tuna every now and then too but start on the white fish.

Iirx it's only the last few thousand years humans developed a lactose tolerance into adulthood.

Until we began farming animals for milk there was no time you encountered lactose after your mum stopped best feeding you so the body never wasted the energy on the enzymes

Can't wash herself properly, kidney problems, have to lock her in the kitchen at night because she has started pooping everywhere... Constant meowing, my roomie thinks it's time for her to be put down I'm avoiding it but know it's getting worse... And being trapped in a kitchen for long periods.

First I would seek advice from another vet. If you are giving cat milk don't give him/her anymore as most cats have a milk intolerance. Try feeding cat boiled chicken and rice. I have five cats and when any of them are ill or are recouperating from an operation that's what I give them. Hope your cat is on the mend soon

Aww so sorry to hear this. But most cats as they get old suffer kidney problems. We had this with our cat. It was kinder for both him and us to be put to sleep "

My cat has been living with kidney problems for the last five years. He's on prescription food which is pricy but a sack lasts him so it's not too bad. He's 15 now and his breed can live easily to 25 so it's worth it. He's happy (even when he's enjoying being grumpy) and his weight has stabilised. Very occasionally he has an accident but they're rare and easy to deal with.

He was on neutered male, then hypoallergenic and now gastro intestinal All Royal Canine Brand In fairness to vet he's had xrays which is why we know it's gas and not an obstruction Had blood test with a high white cell count No temperature Vet jus says food intolerance Gonna try some Mylicon which has been suggested He looks so uncomfortable

Vets always push Hills as they get massive incentives from them. Top selling vets get all expenses paid trips to Las Vegas etc.

Royal Canin is a great food but it is worth changing just to try.

Have a bash with Arden Grange. It's very good with allergy problems.

We recommend Royal Canin I am surprised the vet has not done any investigation on your cat and I would certainly get a second opinion. Maybe us Gastro intestinal food. The vet should have given you advise.

You can also see a nurse for feeding advise. Poor little cat I certainly wouldnt wait till next week as Vet prices over weekend out of hours emergency are really expensive.

Get to a good pet shop who can advise on decent food .most brands do small bags so can see which helps .

James beloved ,ardent Grange are good and my cats fussy ,also burns is good my labs on that one for weight

Tempting Devil: she has other issues besides just the kidney problems, if it was just kidneys I'd buy the special food but pretty sure she's going deaf... unlike my first cat which went blind

The pooping is a bad sign. We lost my 22 year old cat a few months ago. She had gone deaf and wasn't eating but would occasionally wail like a child. It broke my heart to have her put to sleep but we had to as she was beginning to suffer.

It's brought a tear to my eye typing this.

If you go on the different manufacturers sites they often do samples of different food for free.

I would not want to take Pet shop advise over a Vet personally. We sell bags in different sizes we have a money back guarantee if the animals dont like it bring it back. If he has had xrays and it shows gas and they have given you meds Im sure the cat will feel better soon.

A LITTLE and OFTEN. Small portions of chicken and boiled rice, but DON'T allow puss to gorge his or herself on one sitting. And make sure he or she has constant access to a supply of nice clean FRESH water.

Been back to the vet as he wasn't improving

He's in pet hospital at the moment being fed charcoal & friendly bacteria

Going to have to start a gofundme I think ! Over £200 vet bill on the horizon . . Ouch !

Not joking, you should have gone to the chemist and bought a pre made saline enema, lubed it up, gently shoved it in you cats bum and squeezed the liquid in it. This would have forced out the poop and gas and give you cat a good cleaning on the inside, cheap than £200. You could have even filmed it and got £200 on you been framed!

Please don't think of diy enema- really dangerous thing to do.

I assume your cat is not insured then?

You need to go back to your vet and there are plenty of foods they can recommend but the chicken and rice and little and often suggestion is good.

Even sardines in tomato sauce slightly warmed used to go down really well with sick cats xx
