"can't diet and I don't usually overeat in anycase (have over xmas though). Started the beginning of this week with 10 mins step, 20 mins yoga and a bit of belly dancing practise each morning. Dunno if I will have time for all that tho when I get back to work. Thinking of taking a swim membership, love that." i've been enjoying step on my wii fit board. I just wish there were different and longer routines. I have a gym membership starting rom 1st Jan with a local ladies only gym. One of my colleagues has joined too so we're hoping that we'll encourage each other.

"not going to comit myself to losing x amount or dropping any dress sizes etc but am gonna try and be a bit healthier - may try a local Zumba class " I keep seeing advertisements for a local jazzercise class which I think looks really fun. They have an offer on too at the moment - 16 classes for the price of 8 if you pay upfront. I'm very tempted but would like to see if the gym has a step class as I think I'd enjoy that more.

"It doesn't actually take that long to become addicted to exercise. I was pleasantly surprised. I walk to and from work every day which is about 8 miles in total by the time I've walked round the office all day. I swim 5 times a week and try to gym it twice a week. Top tip for the pool... early mornings are way less busy than any other time. My gym has a no kids policy after 6pm which is very cool, the less little people splashing around the better. I think threads like this are really good for positive encouragement. I generally have the odd off day but I don't beat myself up cause of it, I just try harder the next day. " Walking is what I do ... still maintain it's the best form of exercise as long as you keep a steady pace

"I can't wait to see all the fat people come to circuit training next week and give up after 1 week. Maybe you should encourage them then, same as this thread is about....encouragement and helping each other." Absolutely... I spent my bonus on a Personal Trainer who is incredibly fit but never once did he make me feel like a lesser being because I was overweight. It's all about attitude. If you've never been overweight then you have absolutely no idea how it feels and it's only now that I've made the effort and lost some weight that I'm comfortable talking about it. People have looked at me differently pretty much all my life and it's comments such as yours that are perhaps said without thought that would make me feel intimidated by going to the gym. When I first went to the gym the guy who showed me round couldn't have been more helpful. I didn't feel intimidated by the fit/beautiful people in there because something in my head had switched. I was doing something about my weight and to be quite honest, I didn't actually give a toss what anyone else thought purely because I was doing something about. So you can sneer at the fat people all you like chuck... but I can guarantee that a little bit of encouragement and changing your attitude towards someone who has struggled hugely to actually get themselves there in the first place will be hugely appreciated by the person you're sneering at. The chances are that they don't come back after a week is more to do with people there making them feel uncomfortable than it is to do with their lack of motivation/willpower etc. Think about it.

Support them and they might stay! I have recently managed to go from size 20 to 16, Christmas has got in the way a little, but am back on it now, running every night. I never thought I would feel the way I do now about food! Being slimmer and fitter and healthier feels much better than any food tastes! You can count me in! Good Luck everyone!

"There are a few key things I learnt from my nutritionist. 1) Keep a diary of exactly what you eat each day. Skinny people overestimate, fat people underestimate. It can be a real eye opener! 2) Eating chocolate cake with veg *does* count! 3) If you start slipping of the wagon you need to realise it straight away and not let it slip. It's all a mind over matter thing, but food like smoking etc has a very long lead time from pleasure to the pain (consequences). So perhaps a bit of pavlovian conditioning: eat something you shouldn't and get someone to slap you hard. You'll soon start to hate food! I've had to give up quite a few foods I love, but just think positive and realise the only person you are cheating is yourself!" what about carrot cake?

"I'll be back in training next week and shedding the few pounds I've put on over the Holiday, losing weight is quite easy it's keeping it off that's the problem " tip for keeping it off? Don't buy in large supermarkets, buy locally just what you need. Do not even consider keeping anything resembling junk food in the house. If u got kids (that includes hubby) tell em to keep their junk in their bedside cupboards. Leave lots of fruit out.

"Also the Atkins Diet highlights an important point. Eating protein makes us feel full fast, where as carbs you can keep shoving it in for ages. (It also can take 10 mins for your stomach to tell your brain you've eaten something!) So look at your diet and assess whether it is balanced or not. "It's a lifestyle thing. Mine has changed unrecognisably since May. I taught myself how to cook. I don't eat ready meals any more which were pretty much how I lived before. I experiment (eat your heart out Nigella) and try new things that I'd never have bothered with before. Top tip... for one who totally loves sausages (no puns please) and it was the one thing that I found hard to give up... buffalo meat is tasty and less fat than beef so I bought some at the local farmer's market and they rock!! I also have breakfast now. I never used to, mainly because I just can't eat first thing in the morning. So now I make a smoothie which has a good helping of frozen fruit, yoghurt, water and protein powder my trainer gave me (again no puns!) and that fills me up and gives me all the good things you're supposed to get from breakfast. I have a whole list of calories/carbs/protein/fat intakes if anyone wants it. It's not about starving yourself... just eating healthily, watching what's going in and cutting out the crap. Eat less, move more. Convert? Me? Oh yes!! " i would appreciate some help but please absolutely no porridge

"Oooooooooooooh really good point Kitten... I find the more exercise I do, the more energy I have. When I'm being a slacker (like today) and sitting round on the sofa, I really can't be bothered doing much of anything. However, the days I've got my arse in gear and gone to the gym, or for a swim, I come home and the chores I have to do here are not such a chore. I find myself having a bit of a buzz out of it. Exercise raises your endorphines and there's nothing much (okay I know I'm wrong already) that beats that feeling when you come out the gym after a workout. Doing more gives you more energy. Not sure how that works but it does for me." My biggest problem is that on wednesday and fridays i do both jobs which means getting home at 6pm, 45 mins in which i normally do a bit of housework, if i eat its a plate of chips as i have to leave at 6.45pm to get to the next job where i shall be until midnight

Your biggest problem is not being organised. It was always mine and for a relatively organised person that was an issue for me. Plan your meals. Plan your food. Plan your shop. It sounds a pain in the ass, it's really not. It's a whole change of lifestyle but it is relatively easy to do if you really want it. I've never stuck to a diet in my life but I have dogged determination when I put my mind to something. You just need to have a meal prepared for your 45 minute time slot. I spend some time at the weekend making things. I eat a lot of chicken so I bake a few chicken breasts and try different spices on them to have in salads. I'm lucky that I like salads... veggies I have more trouble with and carbs are my biggest downfall. Rice, pasta, potatoes, bread... trying to have carbs at lunchtime rather than in the evening was a huge trauma for me. I hate that part but I do it cause I'm determined. I'm guessing (perhaps wrongly) that you work in a pub or something in the evening? Get yourself a pedometer and check how many steps your doing. Walking up and down a bar all night will clock up the miles and you'll actually be amazed how far you walk without realising. Keep a note of what you eat and how much you move and start comparing. It doesn't have to be a hassle... you can make it enjoyable. I could bore you forever with this stuff... mainly cause I'm actually quite proud of myself that I have actually managed to do it. I didn't think that was possible.

" i know i walk miles in the pub, in fact its whats helped me lose weight, waitressing is probably the most walked if you see what i mean, so yes i work a full time day job and shifts in a pub. Its the cooking bit i struggle with, have never learnt properly, mother wouldnt let us, we ate when she decided she was hungry. Will have a read again later of what you have said as im off for a shift, thanks, hugs

" My biggest problem is that on wednesday and fridays i do both jobs which means getting home at 6pm, 45 mins in which i normally do a bit of housework, if i eat its a plate of chips as i have to leave at 6.45pm to get to the next job where i shall be until midnight That's not your biggest problem. "A little tip is to use an electric steamer. I stack mine with meat or fish and veg and put it on the timer, it is a healthy way to prepare food and does cut down on cooking time. xxxx" Yup... a slow cooker is something else I invested in, you can do all sorts in it. Chuck it in before you go to work and your dinner is ready when you get home. Bonus!

When they refused to take it back, the Badge made him take it everywhere with him for a week including parade. Anyway, we're taking it off topic - pm me your latest run time!!!

"avoid buying cheap meat etc if you can. its surprising how much extra fat they cram in to keep the price down. " . I disagree. There may be more fat on the meat, however, cheaper cuts often require slow and longer cooking time, and the fat helps to add flavours that may be destroyed during the cooking process.

"As a new year goodwill gesture I am willing to help one lady lose weight. I do something called emotional freedom technique. With EFT weight loss is a doddle. It does not matter where in the UK you are. I will be helping you over the internet. Anybody who is interested please pm me My offer is serious. We don't have to meet up and all weight loss sessions would be done over the internet. With EFT there are no crazy diets, no cravings etc. I guarantee with EFT weight loss is easy and as we would be doing it over the internet it does not matter where in the UK you are. "I've come down from a size 32 to 22. I'll probably be back to 24 by the time I return to work on the 17. My consultant keeps trying to flog me a gastric band/hysterectomy combo but I know I can do it myself: the quick fix route doesn't appeal. I'm hoping to be half the woman I am now this time next year! I gave up a 20 a day habit overnight because I wanted to. I didn't want to give up my "treats" and exercise: I do now!" After a ropey start where he stated no more than the bleedin' obvious it got quite scientific and useful, as well as being entertaining. Well worth tracking down on iPlayer. More at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ksh7c" I saw this and was very enlightening

"well done girls" Cool thread and congratulations for so many people still with it after 3 weeks. I have put on just under half a stone since before Christmas - mainly through an injury and snow stopping me from running. Oh and too much wine of course. Your thread has given me the nudge to go out for my first run of the year so thank you (I think). Love the idea of using what you would have spent on a take out on something health centered. Good luck to all and hope this thread runs and runs and everyone gets where they want for Spring/Summer.

"I have been given a diet plan and mine has lost me 42 lbs in about 8 months. It's a combination of eating right (but not cal counting) and exercise; Diet: morning - 1 bowl of porridge (or something similar) for energy. Porridge has a lot of sugar and you need a bit of sugar on a morning for energy, don't worry you'll break this sown during the day anyway. Afternoon - 1 deliwrap or 4 slices or wholemeal bread with something in-between. Evening - A balanced meal. Mine is veg, coleslaw, juice drink and a piece of fish. My exercise is: 20 mins exercise bike, 20 mins cross-trainer, 20 mins stepper, push ups, sit ups and a run of 1.5 miles within 12 mins 20 secs. As a note if you want to check your bmi for free if your local asda has a chemist then you can ask to get it checked and theyll weigh you for free and give you a bmi reading (it's very accurate), I personally do it every week just to keep track (I have my reasons). I hope my diet/exercise plancan help people as it has helped me was 15.7 st now 12.4 (before Xmas - breaking back down from 12.8 st ATM lol) " Well done stan Mind you, the exercise bit scares the begeebys out of me. lmao

"Guys...what you need to do its write down what you eat! throw in fruit and cut the crap out! see how you get on for a week! tracking what you eat will really help... when you feel hungry... drink water? chew gum or have a soup... something that make you feel fuller for longer... you must do a work out! that will get you sweating and out of breath! and I dont me sex! Power walk? or jogging. " you are right, the fruit really works. always have fruit for when you are snacky after a while it becomes a habit. I find bananas particularly good for the munchies and also a glass of natural yoghurt 2/3 to 1/3 skim milk if you feel ravenous, cos that's when you are most susceptible.

Your stomach then starts to produce acid in anticipation of that food. When it doesn't get that food all you end up with is a stomach ache and still feeling hungry.

"I'm really struggling to stay on the straight and narrow this week. I am craving junk food of any kind. Have a hankering for take-aways. I have managed to abstain so far but not sure how much longer before I cave in. Help " If you cave in move on tomorrow. I have a handy hint for pastry craving. It takes a helluva lot of willpower to bake a corned beef and onion plate pie and not eat the other seven pieces so if you want a lower cal fix buy a pack of frozen jus rol vol-au-vent cases. Each one has only 69 cals you can take them out of the pack individually, bake them in a few mins and fill them with healthy low cal stuff.. prawns, mushrooms, salmon etc etc. Just that little taster will take the craving away. They make a change from a sandwich or bread with soup. Three with a god healthy filling and salad is a pretty guilt free lunch. Also you can fill them with blueberries or apple sauce etc for a sweet treat. Much better than caving in to a couple of bags of crisps or a chocolate bar...

"Just thought about this post today, so good to see that everyone is doing so well! I have managed to get to 30lbs myself, now down from size 20 to size 14! One question, what is everyone doing with their profile, are you adding a note on about losing weight, have you changed your photos? Could it cause problems with meets? ie is it as bad to have old pics on that show you larger as it would be to have old pics that show you smaller? Think I might actually ask the question in a new post? " Ive put a note on my profile, i just look a bit thinner. But will change my photos when ive lost 5stone

Wanting to lose another 20lbs or so, but going for more of a size want to be a comfortable 12! Thanks

"Well I have done it. Signed up for the Marie Curie Swimathon. Decided on the 2.5km distance. I have 6 weeks before the event. Me thinks I am going to be spending lots of time in the swimming pool. " Thats a great Idea and a great incentive well done. Going to find out when the moonwalk (breast cancer walk) is in Peterborough.
