Getting married abroad

Does anyone know which countries in Europe you can get legally married almost spontaneously.

I'm trying to avoid a big wedding and want to get hitched on holiday without the inlaws being involved.

They'll go nuts at us by I'm prepared for the back lash!

We're off to Cape Verde soon but you have to be there for 30days before they'll even consider it.

Registry office somewhere at home? Humanist ceremony in a local hotel here.

My sister got married in Greece a few years back and it was a nightmare of planning, paperwork and logistics.

I suggest you get online & look at travel agents wedding brochures to see the laws & residency requirements of European countries as they are all different.

Wherever you get married you need to post your bands (I think that's what it's called) in your local registery office two weeks before.

I got married in Italy. It wasn't any hassle. We turned up a couple of days before, registered with the mayor then got married. We had an Italian wedding planner so they arranged everything.

My friend who did it last month got wed at their local registry office just them & their 3 daughters & went straight to airport. It was his 40th birthday. They announced it by her wishing her husband a very happy 40th birthday on Facebook & prepared for the rollicking when they got home but there was none.

Costa Blanca Spain...

We got married in Germany and although the ceremony was quick and simple the paperwork beforehand was a bit difficult and time consuming.

Firstly I needed my birth certificate, previous marriage certificate and my divorce papers, so far so easy. Then we are told that on their own they are not good enough without "attestation" which (to cut a long story short) means you have to send them to the UK attestation office in Milton Keynes and get them. for 30 quid a pop plus postage, "legalised". We then had to get them translated word for word into German. After that the local town hall sent them to a higher office (court) for a final decision. All in all it took around 3 months.

Yes, I was married under US law (Hawaii) and it was just as expensive and protracted to dissolve that marriage as a UK one!

Trust me I'm already in trouble and trying not to make it worse. I just want it over and done with but don't want any arguments which I'll get either way.

St Lucia. Only need to be in the country 7 days before I think. No paperwork hassles and legal back in UK.Couldn't recommend it highly enough and a lot of Sandles resorts are couples only, no kids
