I always find the subject of charisma fascinating, a persons natural, inherent likeability (or lack thereof), and wondering exactly what it is about those who have it that makes them so irresistible?

Which celebrities do you think have that natural 'it' about them, and which ones do you feel are the opposite?

For me most: Matt Lucas, Simon Pegg

Least: Noel Gallagher, Kanye West

Not sure what you see in him, personally ever since I was a kid he's struck me as an absolute blank in terms of anything resembling likeability or personality. Rather like Bono in that respect, although credit where it's due, despite being an absolute wanker the Irishman is actually a pretty good singer.

That's all it is at the end of the day.

It says as much about the observer as the observed.

We are not all drawn to what we view as postive models. All too often we are beguiled by something a little sinister. Charisma is neither good nor bad.

Has it ....... Martin Clunes. Or perhaps I confuse charisma with gentle decency and humanity.

Has it.... Keith Lemon though in a strikingly different way to Martin.

Has it..... Miles Jupp

Has it...... Katie Price

Has it ......... Dwayne Johnson

Ken Robinson, Meryl Streep, Camila Batmanghelidjh, Oprah ....

Don't have it ..... Vast majority of people.

And I said most politicians, not all. And thats just from my personal viewpoint, and having worked with quite a few on all levels from local to MEPs.

Good job there is such a wide range of tastes on the planet, be dull if we all liked the same.

Not really, it goes beyond subjective opinion, rather like a persons looks. Sure, it may be said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but some have more beholders than others, and charisma is no different.

If you take 100 people, 99 of whom find you magnetic and one thinks you're a charmless twat, that doesn't reduce your charisma to a matter of opinion.

For me charisma is something that makes you notice someone even though they are not trying to be noticed.

Believe it or not, studies will tell you that Hitler was one of the most charismatic of people. It's not actually to do with likeability (or so the studies say) - it's about a certain 'presence' about someone - almost hypnotic - and people listen to what they say and believe them - exactly why Milliband failed as Labour leader - he lacked charisma apparently

My sister and brother in law got a dog this year. They're not particularly sociable people and he said having a dog was like having instant charisma!

To me, it's confidence, warmth, intelligence, humour and charm. Now charm, that's a subject worthy of it's own thread...

derren brown is an NLP specialist.. thats not charisma and the way he is towards people who are naturally intuitive is arrogant and i cant stand the man..he thinks hes cleverer than everyone else when he knows how to do anchoring and mind games..bleh...not many people i dont like..but hes one of them...

There were a lot of very intelligent people surrounding Hitler. And he convinced them all to do horrible things to other nations, many of his ideas were completely irrational but they followed him anyway. How does that happen?

I never said it was charisma. He has a rare skill set that he has honed to an incredible level. I have used NLP as a tool and have seen it used but to nowhere near that level.

It is hard to be working at that level with such a level of interest without having a massive ego to go with it. He just isn't overt with it which may be why he comes across as smug and a bit patronising.

Interesting that there are so many conflicting opinions on who's charismatic. I'd suggest that's because we know someone charismatic when we meet them... but charisma doesn't translate onto TV, film, or radio. I think real charisma is just about energetic resonance. A few years back I went round a mates house and a couple he knew were there... when she walked in the friggin electricity was bouncing off the walls between us. She was utterly entrancing. I could've stared at her till the cows came home... and it wasn't to do with looks... it was just something energetic between us. That's what I think of when I think of charisma.

One of the guys who has taught me martial arts has incredible charisma...His mere presence in a a room makes everybody put in an extra 20% instantly. Without even speaking. His passion for his art is infectious and it is just so positive and lifting its almost spiritual..

gravitas tends to be more serious I think, though very similar. Still about 12 points difference in scrabble. .
