should or shouldn't i download windows 10 ..didnt really like windows 8 much and dont know what haoppened to windows 9

If I was stuck with 8 Id switch to 10 its an improvement. However I have 7 upgraded to 10 and days later rolled back to 7 as its by far superior!

I've recently upgraded one of my PCs from 7 to 10...so far no real issues, apart from challenging my decision to download utorrent...

I have also added a wireless mouse, keyboard and speakers and all 3 have been accepted.

My advice would be to give it a few months and hopefully, if there exist any security issues, they'll get ed out.

I went from 7 to 10 a long time back, like many here - there are about 10 threads on the topic. Not had issues and it's been a simple system to use that I prefer. I think it's a bigger improvement for 8 users (not 8 people!). Overall I think it's a more secure system and a bit slicker too.

Windows Mobile is about to upgrade free to 10 too and the interoperability between the PC and mobile versions is great.

The new Mobile 10 lets you connect your phone to a display or TV and it works like it is a desktop computer too.

There was never a 9.

This was to make sure programs which behave differently if they detect Windows 95 or 98 (4.0 and 4.1) don't think "Windows 9" is related to those. So they skipped a number.

I'd suggest checking the spec of the device you upgrade. I upgraded a laptop recently from 7 to 10 and I've killed it. Was an old laptop so probably spec wasn't right and think I've lost my football manager progress

No no no do not go there. I bought my laptop last November with Windows 7 pro on it. I upgraded to W10 in August. Its never been the same since and is now corrupted. I have given up and paid out £200 for a new laptop. Even the technician in the shop doesn't recommend it

I downloaded it about a month ago. No issues whatsoever and superior to 7 which I had previously. It's smooth, slick and boots up twice as quickly as before x

I can't get my windows 9 and sage 2014 to link to my email . Lord knows what will go wrong if I install windows 10

i sometimes think i am far too cycnical. but why would a company which makes money from selling software decide to give it away for free?

it may be a great idea initially but i forsee problems for folk who upgrade.

i was researching whether microsoft office 2010 will work with windows 10 and came across an article which said that in fifteen months the only version of office which wouid run would be office 2013, or the newer office365, which is £70 A YEAR as opposed to a one off payment to purchase. they were also intending to block free office software, such as libre office from working.

i also found another article which recons that microsoft have hinted at charging for updates, which with windows 10 you have to agree to being done automaticaly.

i may be becoming paranoid but it makes sense to get everybody on board for free then start charging for everything. your profits will soar with the only alternative being a completely different operatng system.

as has been said many times before,

there is no such thing as a free lunch

this is only one peice of software,

They're discounting the price down to £0 for upgrades from 7, 8, and 8.1, for a year - but once you have the upgrade installed, you will NOT have to pay for it after that point.

You only have to pay for the upgrade if you wait for more than a year without upgrading - it will stop being made available for free to those currently on 7, 8, and 8.1, at that point.

Support cost, mostly.

By only having one version of Windows to care about (long term, anyway - 7 and 8 are supported until January 2020 and 2023 respectively), they massively reduce the costs at their end. For example, instead of needing to test upgrades to Internet Explorer on multiple versions of Windows, they just have one instead.

It doesn't end up costing them much - new computers always get sold with new Windows anyway (it doesn't matter which version), and their main customers, big businesses, get upgrades as part of their big expensive annual software license fees anyway (they just choose not to upgrade for other reasons, like risk of breaking critical apps)

There aren't any charges published, as far as I'm aware. If my son may experience major issues with it, I'd stick to 7 for a few months op. It's a free upgrade to 10 until July next year. 7 and 10 are great but slightly different. If you're together out shopping over the next few months, take a look at pcs in the shops and try it out.

Unless Windows 7 Is left for dead by windows, I,m staying with 7 no one says you have To go anywhere and hopefully may this Last into the future, my pc came loaded With it so its very at home in my pc not Like haveing a new version Inside.

I've upgraded one of my PCs from 7 to 10.

So for no serious issues however the desktop theme looks vary flat and basic, lacking a lot of the nice Aero and Glass effects that really made both vista and 7 look so good.

In my opinion Vista was a triumph of style over substance. Windows 7 solved some of the lack of substance and kept the style. Windows 10 definitely is technically better than 7 but why could we not have kept the cool theme styling as well I don't know.

just remember once you upgrade and go over the trial period you cannot go back as windows changes your slic cert windows key

any laptop that has a return to factory settings will fail as windows 10 has been installed and not your factory settings installation

any format or wipe of system you may get an error as you key in your windows certificate keycode as a windows 7, 8, 8.1 keycode wont work as windows 10 was installed on your system with a windows 10 keycode

you have to pay for it if you want it on windows 10 its same with its games, apps or other programs that windows uses

As of build 10565, this issue no longer happens. Windows 10 will accept Windows 7, 8, 8.1 keys directly if those keys have ever been used when upgrading to 10

windows 10 will except upgrades from most systems

its fine going up to windows 10

its using factory settings is not as factory settings is either windows 7, 8 or 8.1 and not windows 10

factory settings will not match your slic cert code within your bios as windows 10 wipes it, replacing it with a new slic cert keycode which is your authentication its a real legit copy

also it has an effect upon formating after catching a virus and reinstalling your original bought install disk as the oem key no longer matches due to a bios upgrade by microsoft

unless you go out and buy another copy of windows with a new keycode

Get uTorrent, still works, and go get a VPN aswell as recommended from extratorrent

Because if reports are right, you be charged for things, and win10 will only be kind of free for 4 years. Microsoft from day one where charging for a card game. Same model as they have for office etc, or another american based software model micro payments/yearly license as in antivirus. So you can upgrade for free, but never delete the files on you C: drive where the old OS is stored, so you can rollback.

Either way win 10 not a freebie, and very snoopy reporting back, if you use in built media.

your right ..having done a bit of research on windows 10 it is apparent that theres massive privacy issues ..windows/Microsoft will have complete control of your machine .

a data-mining machine of the highest order .including the ability to utilise your cam and microphone to really find out all about you .

some of this can be disabled but a lot of people wont bother or know how to and of course some wont care.

think i'll give it a miss and stick to my windows 7 and 9 laptops.

it looks quite good but i can manage with what i have quite well

My nvidia graphics card keeps causing my pc to blank out and freeze its so annoying I have tried new drivers and firm ware still get the same issues so I need to ditch it

Useful to read the debate on here. I downloaded the upgrade, but not yet installed. I'm using 8.? currently (the "upgrade" to the original W.8 and have to say it works smoothly for me (although the laptop is a reasonable spec. However, friends who have upgraded seem to have laptop performance issues and suddenly a lack of useable RAM, so presume there's a lot more going on behind the scenes
