We hope someone can help.

We went to use our hotmail account which we havnt used for a while and after logging in a request came up for our telephone number saying it was to protect our identity and info.

Is this a genuine request.

It's so they have a method of reminding you of your password if you forget it. Nothing 'disgusting' about it.

hotmail is not the only one that is asking for phone verified accounts

sooner or later the account will lock down, ive had and a few friends account has also done it

they have to be verified by a code number

ive got the old .com ones so verified mine and theres using my account

co.uk cannot be verified with the same

Yes; the request is for a cellphone number so MicroSoft can send a 4 digit verification code which you then enter into the system. I think, MS are using this to close down the tens of millions of dormant email accounts
