Treating the common cold

Jump to newest

By *harpDressed Man OP   Man

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

In celebration of the slight sniffle that has been creeping up on me for three days, I am now in treatment mode.

This means a regime built up over the years to minimise the impact of the incurable...

Lots of vitamin c

Many layers of clothing

Lemsip tablets

My question is - what other treatments / old wives tales do you use to drive out a cold?

(waits to see how long before a particular cliché is invoked)

Keep your fluid levels up and as well as vitamin-C try to keep your electrolytes at the correct levels.

take echinacea over the winter months to boost the immune system - if you get sniffly just double the dose for a few days - it works

Getting meets is hard enough without factoring in a snotty nose and hacking cough!

That'd be one for someone's "worst meet" thread...

Being on steroid treatment which suppress my immune system it took me a week to fight off a very slight cold.

Vics first defence spray is good when you feel a cold coming on.

Fishermans friend tablets also help me

Thanks to all - will later jump in a bath full of echinedea tablets, fully clothed, then come back to whine about how useless you were!

I also appreciate the lack of the term "man-flu"....

Wrap up and get some fresh air, ideally the coast.

Do something to distract you.

Eat lots of nice fresh foods, ideally with fresh garlic, ginger and chilli (anti virals and vitamins)

Then have some comfort drinks to get you warm and sleepy, like a fucking strong whiskey hot toddy.

There is no cure for man flu - it's deadly!

But there is actually nothing you can do for a commen cold unfortunately

Lemsip and olbass oil are your friends - along with comfy warm clothes, no work, a series or endless films to watch, hot baths and bed ( by yourself )

Then in a few days you'll be good as new x

If you have already got it or its creeping up its too late.

Avoid colds by having plenty of vitamin C, zinc and garlic in your diet.

The Town by The Cross

At first sign...

Gargle with a sea salt solution ( or table salt if no posh rock salt )

Close one nostril , sniff saline up the other and allow to trickle down throat.

Repeat with other nostril.

( Bacteria hate salty conditions )

Take paracetamol.

Drink tons of drinks of any kind preferably not caffeine or sugar laden.

Stay in bed with window open. Have snuggly sleeps.

Go for a half hour walk well wrapped up each day.

Go back to bed.

Blow nose and throw away tissues.

Drink garlic water. Made at home.

I put a garlic bulb in a ginger tea cos bacteria hate ginger.

Hot toddy of brandy/whisky and water before bed. ( Does no good but feels great )

Keep drinking , keep sleeping, keep blowing.

All over when it's over and not before. Just make yourself comfortable.

to bullet point....

gargle and snort saline 3 times a day.

take paracetamol 3 times a day.

drink all day

sleep all day

walk once per day

Don't buy expensive named products....... they don't work.

( I do like a Sudafed nostril spray though )

Central

I think that the only research evidence supporting anything that shortens the duration of a cold is for zinc supplementation. Other things may offer some symptom relief, such as using menthol/eucalyptus extract with steam inhalation for blocked noses, NSAIDs for easing of swelling - though there has been research indicating Ibuprofen was ineffective for colds and Paracetamol may also be of help. Research findings look at groups of people, so individual results vary.

I follow my body's advice when I have a cold - it's telling me to rest, whilst I recover. I may or may not use a decongestant but am wary - as with use of painkillers - of rebound effects.

Zinc tablets will help to raise your immunity after being on steroids.

As to the OP's question, I would go down the gym for a couple of hours and sweat it, usually works for me. Him.

Lots of folk here spending money on useless crap.

Lemsip is a profit making thing. It's been cleverly marketed, that's for sure but it's basically paracetamol in liquid form.

Colds are self-limiting diseases that you can relieve the symptoms of but not shorten or cure.

Prevention is better and a good working immune system will fight off any colds. Most folk in this country are severely Vit D deficient so you may want to supplement. Give up smoking, crap food and getting pissed.

Ditto. Also grapefruit juice seems to help for some reason...apparently it speeds up the effect of paracetamol or something.

But the cold is not a bacteria it's a virus. It doesn't perform any osmotic functions and so is unaffected by salt unlike bacteri which me can be "dried out" by it viruses uses your own cells
