"As right across England it's the opening meet for the fox hounds who's going and who does not understand hunting ?"

I understand hunting, I've been doing it all my life.

Setting a pack of dogs on a Fox is not hunting, it's cruelty in the name of pest control.

Not my thing to go and do but I do understand the reasons behind it and personally I do support the rights to hunt (my family has a lot of farmers in it)

Hunting is the acquisition of food.

Fox hunting is pest control in a very inefficient way just for the supposed enjoyment and a good ride out. A half decent gamekeeper bags more foxes with less effort than any hunt ever did.

Exactly. It's also far more humane.

So I blame the yanks.....

You have done a thread on this before and it didn't end well from my memory.

I'd like to say your life live it how you want. But when you do things like that for entertainment enjoy your thread.

It's nice to delude yourself that people who don't agree don't understand makes things very black and white I'm guessing...

Not my thing as both a horsey person and country dweller.

Same thing as Bullfighting in my opinion. Killing for entertainment.

Not efficient or humane pest control at all.

agree.....it is a cruel and unnecessary activity which questions the mentality of those who derive pleasure from it.if the fox was such a pest or danger it would have been eradicated like other species have been.don't try and mask the crude violent pleasure of killing an animal as sport or as a necessary activity.....and don't claim people 'don't understand'.it really is nothing more than the enjoyment of killing.

Its pretty sick it has to be said. I don't mind hunting but fox hunting with horses and dogs etc is vile. I heard the horns once when i was a kid and hated the sound too.

Whats wrong with just shooting something why do you have to rip it apart?

I go hunting with a pack of bloodhounds not fox hounds. They are hilarious. I used to help walk them. Had 2 of the puppies on leads they got excited wrapped round my legs then 2 of the other puppies also on leads wrapped round my legs the other way. I thought it would be best if I sat down to untangle myself but as I did so 25 loose bloodhounds decided to play "pile on" and I got mobbed and pocket emptied of biscuits. My fave hound would walk beside me and undo the zip on my pocket I had biscuits in and help himself.

I understand control of pests I was brought up shooting. I've also used dogs ferrets traps and with rats and mice poison.

If you eat meat an animal shot in the wild led a far better life and got a better death than a production line another!

However killing for fun is not fun to me and not enough reason for a sane human to take an animals life.

No Fox hunting was allowed on our families land and mother nature balanced out Fox populations with no help from us.

Can I point out that riding a horse behind a pack of hounds is more about enjoying riding than killing anything. Its funny also that you all forget that we no longer hunt foxes with hounds as its illegal. Hounds legally follow scent laid down or in the case of bloodhounds they have always hunted human scent. The big issue is people dont understand and believe everyone who hunts are "toffs" and rich. Few are as if you have ever owned a horse you would know they litrally eat money!!!

People still are hunting with dogs but the Fox hunting brigade get away with it while people using terriers for rabbit's get collared by the rozzers.

If riding is so much fun why do they need to dress like twats behave pissed hooligans and risk injuries to an innocent horse?

We hunt a pack of terriers legally as thats legal as long as its rabbits or rats. We dress for the days hunting to show respect to the land owners who give us permission to hunt on their land and also my attire is designed to keep me warm and dry and protect me from injury. My horses are prepared for hunting with excercise and good food. I care about my horses and their welfare so in short get educated about my sport before talking shit..

Try stopping a pack of hounds from deviating from the trail that has been laid down when they come across a foxes scent though. In my experience some hunts still practice bagging and stopping-up of holes- why, if they are in fact just following a trail?

I'd make them eat every fucking morsel of every fox that gets chased to exhaustion then ripped apart by dogs. More foxes are killed with dogs now than were before the hunting act and we get hare coursing out here all the fuc King time...they just throw them in the hedge...it's also road kill city here because 1000's of pheasants have been released by game keepers for shoots...do it if you must, but don't dress it up as anything more than what it is...killing things for fun...they're no better than badger and bear baiters, they just have better publicity and more powerful supporters

The attire is irrelevant. Fyi not everyone wears red coats- certain hunt staff-including the master, and those that have been invited to, wear it. The dress code is not the point.

Neither is the wealth.

Its the way the fox dies.

I have worked in hunting and those that perpetuate the myth that it is anything less than inhumane are deluded.

They're allowed to kill a fox if one crosses the path of the pack...because foxes often just "wander"across the path of a pack of dogs out for a jolly old gallop...or they do when released from a bag they've been kept in by hunt employees...and other well known practices...have a look at "cubbing" if anyone is in any doubt...

Hunting with a pack of any dogs isn't hunting, regardless of prey.

All you are is a spectator with a list to see an animal ripped to shreds.

I grew up hunting and still hunt (for food) in the true sense. Me against an animal. What you do goes against every moral code a true hunter follows.

Essex.

When Labour was working on making fox hunting illegal, they commissioned an independent study to prove that they were right bringing in the ban.

The study stated that fox hunting wasn't as cruel and inefficient as Labour were making out...

They tried to bury the report as it didn't support them...

I'm not taking sides, just stating a fact.

Actually if undisturbed they would remove every single chicken and go and bury them- thus creating a "larder" for themselves.

And a point of order for some of the above posts.

"Bagging" is the practise of catch and release of a fox in alien territory, "cubbing" is entirely different- that is the pre hunting-season training and exercise of the pack.

Hunting Pink is not worn by every hunt but most have some members entitled to wear them- its to do with etiquette.

"I support Oscar Wilde's view. "

I hadn't heard it before, so I googled it to see for myself:

"The English country gentleman galloping after a fox – the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable"

Which leads me to talk a little about, and quote the pro-hunting article I just read that in:

"Most people asked to come up with a quote about hunting would offer Oscar Wilde’s description of “The English country gentleman galloping after a fox – the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable” from the play A Woman of No Importance. There is no argument that it is a typically clever line. It is worth noting, however, that it is delivered by an unpleasant character called Lord Illingworth who, in the same scene, decries democracy and promotes slavery."

It counters with another quote:

"I prefer a quote which I have never managed to definitively source, but which sums up the whole anti-hunting campaign, and the problems that hunting faces: “They don’t hate us because we are cruel. They call us cruel because they hate us”"

The article in full for anyone who's interested:

https://huntingoffice.wordpress.com/2011/10/26/oscar-wilde-and-why-they-hate-us/

My thoughts on this are, when it comes to opposing the evil of the fox hunt, don't be a sheep (because sheep are of course, a poor choice of being to be championing the fox), don't simply assume that making a poignant quote will be enough, because you can always count on some slippery bastard on the other side of the fence having heard it before. Think about the deeper nature of what it is you are in opposition to, and build your argument from there - personally I've always said, a properly organised and (this is the crucial part) HUMANE culling of animals is acceptable in my eyes if it's done for the greater good of the collective, ie, for the protection of other wildlife, the environment and of course our own interests such as food, charging after a terrified beast for fun, having a merry old time with your mates and then having your dogs tear it into gory pieces isn't, this practice isn't simply a barbaric act of unleashed passion and ferocity, it's a pre-planned, calculated act of malice to gain a dark, wretched form of pleasure.

We do not have dominion over the animals, for we are simply another species of them, they do not exist for our pleasure and benefit, they are our neighbours, and should be treated as such, deserving the same respect and compassion as anyone else in your community. Hunting for sport in a society with no shortage of food and resources is an evil, twisted pursuit, and no rational argument can be made for it's existence among a supposedly civilised species such a humankind.

"Sport" hunting is a sickness, a perversion and a danger, and should be recognised as such. People who get their 'amusement' from hunting and killing defenceless animals can only be suffering from a mental disorder. In a world with boundless opportunities for amusement, it's detestable that anyone would choose to get thrills from killing those who ask for nothing but the chance to remain alive" - Sir Roger Moore.

Which brings me to a quote from another article:

"'hose people, they don't care about the fox,' snaps a belligerent woman. 'They just think we're toffs and want us to stop having fun."

Amazing how someone can damn themselves with a line intended for defence eh?

Look wether we like it or not foxes are a pest and farmers have to protect their crops our food ,the practice of hunting has been a tradition for hundreds of years as was hanging and hang draw and quartering but their comes a time when things have to end because they are barbaric ,cull the fox population in the humane way with a rifle

"Look wether we like it or not foxes are a pest and farmers have to protect their crops our food ,the practice of hunting has been a tradition for hundreds of years as was hanging and hang draw and quartering but their comes a time when things have to end because they are barbaric ,cull the fox population in the humane way with a rifle "

That reminds of a quote I once read

'Tradition: Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's not stupid'

I'm very sure it would be all over the news if the pack of bloodhounds I have hunted with tear the human runner limb from limb when they catch him. i have also seen a video recently of a pack of fox hounds out on hound exercise who find a fawn in the long grass. Did they tear it limb from limb no. It was even seen running amongst the hounds. Fox hunting that goes on today is only loosely based on the traditional principals from the past and actually hardly catches any foxes. The pleasure comes from the thril of riding horses over some amazing countryside and views you might not ordinarily get to see. Bringing in ban 10 years ago was a complete waste of time. The law itself has so many loop holes in IMO they banned the wrong thing they should've revised the anti cruelty laws

Speaking as a landowner who allows the local hunt on our land, this will slowly be what ends hunting. The only people I allow on our land are the actual hunt master and whipper in. Too many times now have the 'followers' spoke to me like I'm something one the bottom of thier boots, had total disregard to my property. The only reason they are allowed on at present is the discounted rate I get for removal of my fallen stock (thats now not far off the same cost as my local knackerman now so the days are numbered there too). They used to be around here 4/5 times a year, now they are lucky to get here twice, mainly due to lack of available ground to hunt over, was told by the hunt master last year that if 1 more farmer in the area denys permission then they won't be able to come in this area.

My local hunt hasn't caught anything in years in this area, and I doubt they ever will. Last year they were disgusted when I refused permission for them do dig out one which had 'gone to ground' Sorry but the fox had won that one.

I understand hunting, I've been doing it all my life.

Setting a pack of dogs on a Fox is not hunting, it's cruelty in the name of pest control."

spot on iv been hunting since I was a kid and would never want to see an animal suffer.

the excuse of fox hunting with hounds as pest control is a fucking joke because chasing one fox isn't anywhere near as effective as a group of hunters with rifles who might shoot 15 Foxes a night.

If crushing foxes beneath the wheels of a car was considered an organised sport rather than an unfortunate hazard of country driving then you may have had something resembling a point there.

We haven't evolved, we've been around what! 200,000 years?

Perhaps because like so many animals, it's a predator, and feelings such as mercy and compassion would be detrimental to it's existence. Humans however (well, many of us) have a well developed and fine tuned emotional radar that allows us to care for those other than ourselves, we call this 'compassion/empathy', and only through this radar were we able to survive the countless challenges that faced our race throughout the millions of brutal years, and somehow grow to the point that we have now. To choose not to care and respect others, is to choose to not be human.

From my experience not much money on the hunt these days. The odd bit of old money clinging onto tradition but not like it used to be.

Most of the people who frequent our Livery are thankfully not interested in it either.

We all play the fox at some point in our lives, and I feel the same way when I see a homeless person in the street - no one is invincible. I remember once reading a saying that moved me deeply

'Be the change that you want to see in the world'

We all have our moments of strength and weakness, and so by showing compassion for those who are going through hardship, I PROVE that there is kindness in the world, and people willing to lend a hand, and it offers me reassurance that in my own dark times, there might just be someone willing to help me find my way to somewhere where the skies are blue and the grass is green again.

.

Survival of the fittest!!

It's strange how that line always gets bantered about by well... Fit people.

Of course Darwin actually only wrote about a page on it, there's page after page after page dedicated to mankind's ability to actually look after one another, because in reality, singularly were a pretty shit species, however when we work together, were pretty shit hot!.

There's a spore or a fungus I remember watching on a doc, where all the bits come together as one to create a singular creature, it's the only way it can multiply by throwing out it's off spring, nature is very very fascinating at times!

Homosapians are a relatively new species, 200,000 years is fuck all in the grand scale of things, crocodiles haven't evolved in millions of years because in reality they don't need to.

I'm a firm beliver in technology will be our saviour or our curse

We can choose which outcome but going off the evidence, I don't think we are capable unless pushed!

For all my love of freedom, I personally think it's the worse fucking thing for mankind as were inherently destructive by nature and our evolutionary growth is being massively overtaken taken by technologies evolution.

You see people say they love their kids but then tell them a problem like climate change which means them actually sacrificing something for their kids and whammo....

No fucking way, they can't even give up carry bags ffs!

If we want to talk cruelty to animals maybe we should look at a lot of (pet)Owners.

hey I couldn't personally kill a fox I'm just saying they are the loser ,it's because somehow they successfully increase their numbers and pillage and scavenge and ultimately they have to lose look at the Colorado beetle ,the piranha fish ,the rat anything that is successful at breeding and eating things we as humans need has to die ,it is the law of nature also things that spread disease

Also, somebody was rattling on about " crops", foxes do not bother crops, they keep down the number of herbivores that do, if only the Farmers could see them as a friend who helps and just put more effort into protecting their livestock properly.

I live in the country and I won't deny I do love seeing the hunt when there out and about, only because I like seeing the hounds! (I do love those kinds of dogs!) and yeah I like seeing the guys and girls on their horses BUT I don't agree with the end result.

Erm, what is done to animals in the name of religion? Except halal, which does not really apply to foxes.

How typically arrogant - assuming because people don't 'hunt' they don't understand it...

Or just attention seeking toddler outburst???

Setting a pack of dogs on a Fox is not hunting, it's cruelty in the name of pest control."

i don't understand foxhunting. Never even been on a horse, talked to a pony once and was sneezing for hours. However... I have no issue witb foxhunting, the traditional kind before they banned it. Not something i would do myself bui I support the 'each to thier own' principle and tradition matters more to me than the lives of a few hundred foxes or the general principle of animal cruelty- another thing i never understood.

"The attire is irrelevant. Fyi not everyone wears red coats- certain hunt staff-including the master, and those that have been invited to, wear it. The dress code is not the point.

Neither is the wealth.

Its the way the fox dies.

I have worked in hunting and those that perpetuate the myth that it is anything less than inhumane are deluded."

Removing predators has proven time and time again to be a terrible pest control solution, and there are rabbits, rats and squirrels all over the uk - eradicate the fox, and the prey population explodes. Then you get real crop devastation and disease.

Article smacks heavily of right wing bias to me, interestingly steering well clear of any 'fun' element regarding hunting with hounds.

Wonder why?

So just out of interest do you not understand why dog fighting is banned? after all they are only dog and if people want to fight them 'each to their own', do you not understand the need for organisations such as the RSPCA? What part of animal cruelty are you struggling to understand?

I had to read this twice.

You have no issue with something you don't understand?

Ok.

Principle and tradition matters more than the general principle of animal cruelty which is something else you don't understand?

Ok.

Natural er no.

Predators, hunters (dogs)(wolves)

do not generally hunt similar species.

Your "natural" is simply years of in breeding. They hunt fox because we tell them to hunt fox.

New quote" the uneducated pontificating about a mystery"

This is an age old debate and most of the people with strong views against something are the ones with least actual knowledge or understanding, as per usual. It's almost as entertaining as a thread on bareback sex where those with no knowledge castigate others over their choices....when their lack of knowledge puts them at exactly the same risk as the barebackers.

My advice...keep quiet unless you are completely accurate with your facts or you will simply be taken for the fool that you are.

I've never had anything to do with it and really had no interest to find out about it either ok so the dogs hounds are trained to do it ,so that's even worse ,I think then the hounds and the fox bit should definitely be taken out and the toffs should just ride their horses indiscriminately through the countryside

Any of you with the extensive dog knowledge ever owned a hound of any type?...,,thought not. Try stoping them trailing a scent. That's what they are doing not "hunting" as you describe it. You need a lot of training to get them to stop lol

So what?

There are probably tens of thousands of hounds in the uk.

They're not all trained to scent foxes.

Dogs don't fucking hunt dogs in the wild.

You are talking about 400 years of indoctrinated cruelty. Not the natural (inbred) characteristics of dogs.

There we go the typical response of the educated knowledgeable person .... Use the "F" word and totally inappropriately too. I know this is a silly question on a swingers site.... Do you know what fuck means? It is a verb, a doing word, not punctuation or a pause for your brain to catch up with your mouth

Hunting is very cruel how would u like to be chased by a group of lions an then ripped to pieces same principle. ..think how it is for the fox an the fox feels

scared , an hounded an being chased

An having a pack of hounds set on it

its sick an twisted an anyone who thinks this is ok has a sick mind. There are other humane ways of dealing with the fox population, instead of the barbaric way.

Well give me the weapons and I will use them. I could answer your post at length and point out the inaccuracies of most of the anti comments. I could explain dog and hound breeding genetics and natural instinct. I could also describe the sight of a fox shot with poor aim by a frustrated farmer or hen keeper, dying a long death of lead poisoning or blood loss. Or a fox baited with poison again dying slowly in agony. Or the sight of a mangy sick fox moved to town to live off bins made more sick by inappropriate diet. I could explain the fact that hunting ensures that the animals culled are the weak and sick, more likely to raid hen houses and lambs, whilst the healthy and smart get away ensuring strong healthy breeding stock to keep the breed going strong....

But someone who resorts to swearing isn't hear to listen and learn, they are here to shout and bully and override others, so I will save my breath

But are you happy with lambs and hens being slaughtered not for food but just as instinct. Because it isn't fable foxes do kill more birds than they could eat in months on one night... And the same the next. A henhouse full of headless hens and traumatised survivors is ok? Lambs newborn killed again more than can be eaten .... Just a question
