"I have a Renault Megane Cabriolet, for the past month or so it doesn't recognize the card I put in the slot so I can't depress the pedals and press the start button. It seems to happen a fair bit but has anyone actually got this fixed, my local garage ( non Renault ) said its a software issue but they can't do it. So do I need a main dealer or an electrical engineer?" Looks like your trapped there, yep main dealer issue, unless... You check out online blogs about your car issues and how others sorted it out, might save you some pennys. Sorry that's all I can add

"I've read the blogs which is how I know its a common issue, but haven't found one blog where they say they got it fixed or how much it was" That's a bit strange,oh well. Contact a main dealer and enquire in the parts dept have found some to be quite helpful. Electrical issues and cars are just the pits....process of elimination which can be expensive.

"Thanks, its looking like its more than the cars worth " It's worth checking the ECU connectors. If memory serves the ECU is right under the scuttle panel on the passenger side and prone to getting soaked with water or damaged when the air filter is changed. Disconnect the battery then disconnect the plugs from the ECU (there's 3). Check for damaged or corroded pins, give them a clean with some isopropyl alcohol spray, reconnect and then reconnect the battery. It should only take about 30 mins.

"I had the same car.... Once. French eletrics My lights wouldnt switch off once. Regardless of the switch position... Turned out to be a faulty radio. Is the battery in the card just for the central locking or maybe something to do with the imboliser? Do you have a second card to try? " It a just for the central locking, there a a passive transponder for the immobiliser. My ex wife had one that developed a misfire because the aircon needed a regas!

"Ever tried changing the headlight bulb on one? " Phase 1 MK2 the bumper had to come off! Phase 2 MK2 they fitted little hatches in the wheel arches but you still had to Jack the car up to be able to do it. Perhaps the most stupid design ever!
