It is only 78 if you only get the gift once but as the song goes you get all the gifts again for that day i.e. on day 1 you get the 1 Partridge but by day 12 you have been given 12 Partidges and so on; so it is actually

12+22+30+36+40+42+42+40+36+30+22+12 = 364

;-)

explanation:

there are only 3 people

Grandfather is father of his son, and his son is father of his own son.

Grandfather is Grandfather (1 grandfather)

Grand father is also father of his son (1 son)

who is also father to his son (1 son)

seing as the father above is also the son of the grandfather

this equates 1 grandfather. 2 fathers ajnd two sons
