Tata Steel has announced nearly 1,200 job losses at its plants in Scunthorpe and Lanarkshire. How come so suddenly the whole industry is at braking point, is it cos prices are falling world wide? Whats your thoughts?

I don't think it's a sudden thing.

The steel industry has always been volatile, usually due to world wide demand.

my thoughts....are that this country is losing most off it's own home grown companies and either selling/shipping them off to other countries because it's cheaper and they end up making a load of people redundant...

news flash it can be more expensive to import certain materials/stuff etc but hey if they want to screw up their own economy might as well go all the way..

Brighton - even Hove!

I'm sure they will iron out any issues in due course.

Selling to China, when was the last time the Steel industry fell to pieces?

The biggest problem with steel is is a commodity and prices go up and down alot like most commodity's.

Right now it's really cheap and the world's flooded with the stuff.

The yanks increased import duty on foreign steel last year when the price dropped, the EU kicked their heels for a year!

Hence we can't compete with Chinese steel, because they have very very cheap labour and its run by the Chinese government who are currently making huge losses on it!

Cheaper to get Iron from China or other places and of course people want the cheapest price.

Don't help when our government want to hand out massive contracts to China for that rail line.

Quite a few times....Corby steel production was moved to other plants around the UK resulting in the loss of around 10,000 jobs in around 1975 from memory thanks to Harold Wilsons master plan. Steel will always be reliant on demand just as with other commodities.

Its not just the steel industry that is unable to compete on the world market is it.

All of our manufacturing has gone in the last 30+ years.

We now assemble cars, rather than actually make them.

Aircraft industry has been decimated, due to it being cheaper to manufacture elsewhere.

Past governments have decided that Britain would be better off as a service offering country and have gone out of their way to help this side of things.

I think it's important to remember this.... The Chinese are not making steel cheaper than we are!

The Chinese government runs the Chinese steel mills at a massive loss during these periods of price downturn!

It isnt just China that is causing all these problems though.

During the 80s, most European countries were building factories, fully equipping them and then selling the products at below cost.

Then huge handouts to companies to relocate their manufacturing to them.
