"ok, i will start. I have not always been a major fan of slimming groups and have had mixed results with the ones i have joined. Part of this is because i had not bought into the process and cheated a lot. Part of it was that i didnt understand my body and how it reacts to food etc. Hoever, now i understand more about food, carbs both complex and simple, low GI and high GI etc am having much more success at slimming world than ever before. Of course i am aware these are companies that essentially make money out of people being fat and in the past i have believed and espoused that they dont want people to get thin but now i am not bothered what they want from me, i am bothered what i want from me. Slimming world now a days is more about food combining that strict adherance to one way of eating. You are encouraged to have at least half of your meals to be low GI vegetables, eat lean meat, and count fatty or sugary items. All recipes are cooked from scratch. they do have some ready meals but even those have the recipe on the back to encourage you to make your own versions at home." Thanks for this post, it actually explains the changes. As long as places like these are making you think about what it is you're eating and as long as they enable you to leave them after a period of time equipped with the knowledge to go on and live a healthy lifestyle then I can get behind that. | |||

"2 women in my office started slimming world at roughly the same time. One followed it religously, lost over 4 stone and now uses it to maintain her weight. The other has put on a considerable amount of weight follows it untermittently, constantly eats crap like biscuits and crisps, and on the days she does follow it will eat portions of 'free' foods that are larger than I would ever eat as a single meal. I suspect that those 2 experiences are fairly common. If you are wired the right way, they will work and the colleague who's done well credits it primarily to the discipline aspect of the plan, she knows full well what she needed to do but needed the structure" see i was that second lady previously. i was not organised enough to plan meals and ate rubbish pretending it was covered by my syns etc. It as taken a lo of self education for me to understand what works for me and what doesnt and i think that is the other key thing. these groups can only lead you to water....it cannot make you drink (i drink 3 ltr of water a day to aid my weightloss ). unless you are prepared to understand your body it will not work. | |||

"For me, I've done well with slimming world before because I need the accountability of turning up and weighing in each week with other people there. In an ideal world I'd just "eat a balanced diet", yes it's fucking simple, but it's all easier said than done if you have a slightly fucked up relationship with food. That other thread got right on my wick actually, I don't enjoy being patronised by someone who has lost less than I still have to lose after 3 stone by just "eating a balanced diet". Well fuck me if it was as easy as that we'd all be bloody doing it. It's a long hard slog going it alone with MFP or similar, yes people do it but plenty of other people need the social encouragement of groups like SW and WW. Totally agree I've spend my while life yo yo dieting, I have lost count of the times I've got to my idea weight and put it back in again, for a lot of people 'just eat less' does not work and I get really annoyed by people who have never had a weight problem who tell me how easy it is I suffered with CED in the past but had a massive wake up call when my daughter cought me with my fingers down my throat, luckily she was to young to understand but I knew then it had to stop as I didn't want my girls growing up thinking the way I ate was normal, it was a long hard slog to get over that, problem is I was still eating as much but not chucking it back up again so my weight piled on, I have been everything from a size 26 to a size 8 in my adult life and all sizes inbetween, my weight goes up and down so fast I can litterally gain and drop a dress size in a week or two When people say just stop doing it it drives me made, I feel like saying....oh yeah I never fucking thought of that And breath | |||
