Idiots. Just changed a roundabout by work to make it easier for cyclists to use (no problem in that) but since change it has caused six cyclists to be knocked off bikes as the lane markings change halfway round the roundabout causing both cars and bikes to do last min lane changes. Bonkers!

In Bristol some idiot has decided to put a zebra crossing several foot from

A roundabout on a road that links to a ring road and gets really busy

I'm a cyclist and there's problems up here with them too, they have also put small lane dividers in some places that are also causing problems with other road users and cyclists

It's just like the positioning of bus stops within 5 metres of traffic lights, pedestrian crossings at roundabouts are also a nightmare lol

If you want to see town planning at its best, go visit Skelmersdale.

While I agree with the point about the placement of the crossing, the reason could be the amount of pedestrians trying to cross the road there. So it is made safer for them, sadly not you road users.

Try living in Birmingham, bus stops on a roundabout

And pedestrian lights after round abouts and just after you go through a major cross road. The amount of near misses after the cross round is silly, I'm quite a cautious driver and it's caught me once as you just don't expect it

I don't quite understand this thread. Are we saying that pedestrians are a nuisance and shouldn't be allowed on the roads? When pedestrians come to a busy road junction, how are they meant to cross safely?

It's bad enough drivers rarely understand the concept of giving way to pedestrians as it is.

The onus is just as much on the pedestrian. To make sure the road is clear and it's safe to cross as it is the car driver to stop when they see someone waiting .

Pedestrians are supposed to wait till the cars have stopped before they cross .

It's not that difficult to work out , exactly what's the issue

in Cleveleys Blackpool. we have trams. the tram comes the lights give priority to them. them rather than letting the busy main road go. they let the side roads go first. by then another tram turns up and the process starts again. this stops ambulances and the like. seen the police go down the tram tracks. Blackpool council. useless.

and why do people on the tram need to get where there going faster than me?

No it doesn't at all.

All its saying is stick the crossing further down the road so there's a buffer space for cars to stop so they aren't stopped on a blood round about

It's most likely there because many people cross the road there so they have done it to make the road safer for pedestrians. Good idea in my book, as a car driver i look ahead for potential hazards so would spot this and drive accordingly

So you're saying pedestrians are too stupid to walk an extra 10 or 20m to a crossing and instead would ignore it and lemming their way across a round about?

Who cares what you do with your eyes you're still stopped on a round about and the round about is still now congested and not flowing traffic.

No, it's not stupidity, it's called "desire paths". The route a pedestrian will naturally take.

Planners could place the crossing 50 yards or so down the road, where it will still hold up traffic to the same extent, but some pedestrians will then try to cross where there is no crossing. Others will decide the detour is a pain and decide to drive instead.

It's simply a case of the planners deciding whether to prioritise car, foot, public or cycle traffic.

They won't hold traffic up to the same extent at all because either proves a buffer for the cars on the round about to exit and then stop on the road leaving the round about free flowing g

"Not to be pedantic but town planners don't do the placing of crossings...."

But traffic/transport planners do, often in conjunction with policy set by the wider planning/highways departments

(I did traffic management as an option at uni, back in the days when the car was king and we should do everything to speed traffic flow and get rid of those pesky pedestrians. Increasingly we are moving away from that model now)

Is it not the case that sometimes the crossing is placed there because the cars are already less likely to be travelling at speed, whereas further down the road they could be up to 40 or 50.

I know people like to whinge and there are cock ups, but there's usually some kind of logic even if you feel it inconveniences you.

Thank you for making me not the only person to see how fucking idiotic it is to have Pelican/Zebra crossings adjacent to roundabouts/junctions, drivers would need 4 sets of eyes at times to contend with all that's going on around them and will always inevitably be blamed for anything that happens under such circumstances

The onus is just as much on the pedestrian. To make sure the road is clear and it's safe to cross as it is the car driver to stop when they see someone waiting .

Pedestrians are supposed to wait till the cars have stopped before they cross .

It's not that difficult to work out , exactly what's the issue "

The issue is a roundabout is a peptural motion system, placing crossings so close and on blind bends just shows contempt for pedestrians and drivers as it stops a good system and creates a insurance black hole via unsuspecting drivers having to break hard if not used to the area.

My issue is not with pedestrians/ cyclists as it's deemed,I do have a bike and cross roads myself.

Would just like to see crossings placed a bit further away from exits..and they are updated with a lick of paint now and then and working lights.

I see multiple road safety issues as do many others which defy common sense, drivers are not the enemy we pay alot for the system and should be allowed to voice a opinion.
