Seriously does selective education have a place in today's society. I am a secondary modern boy by the way.

I failed my 11+ and went to a secondary modern St Leftfooter for the criminally insane. Our school motto roughly translated from Latin was "kill or be killed" or our another way get them before they get you!

I left with an o level in woodwork and decided at 19 the only way to change the world was by educating myself so I did. It worked!

I went to an all girls grammar and it worked....then. I don't think they're right now, I would like to see good education for everyone based on their ability and I don't see why that needs to take place in a separate location for one academic level.

I think academic streaming within a mixed ability school is the way forward. Worked well for my school.

my daughter is now doing her teacher training at my old school which was an all girls grammar - she went to a mixed grammar and can see benefits of both

For almost 6 years I was a governor at one of the largest comprehensive schools in the north of England and we took great pride in taking on the local grammar and fee paying schools on block sporting fixtures. It's all about aspiration and effort which always encourage talent.

I went to one and I think it really benefited me. It meant that you didn't have to worry about boys at all while at school; they had a far higher take up for traditionally male subjects like physics than mixed schools do; the school used to get the best results of all the comprehensives in the city despite being in a rough catchment area; the school really fostered an atmosphere of girls being able to aspire to do and be anything; and it just removed one of the extra pressures of being a teenager at a time when education is really important.

I had male friends outside of school through other activities and the sixth form was joined with the boys' school so it's not like you're segregated in the world. I'm a big believer in mixed primary schools, single sex for 11-16 and mixed again after that.

And I don't know if it's related but I now still have a really solid group of female friends, most of us went to school together. None of my friends I know who went to mixed schools really had that.

Being selected at 11 as being third best in those days seemed to set my educational pattern. Those who paid attention did the class and home work were generally bullied or mocked. The only interest was sport and playing for the year in football or cricket. I say the only interest but there was M Mann ( girls PE teacher) she used to fill in if a teacher was ill or indisposed. I seem to remember asking the baby Jesus if he would strike most of the staff down with serious illness so Ms Mann could step in and allow me and all the other pre pubescent boys fantasie about her. There was also Anne in class 7 who hab the biggest breasts a boy could imagine. The girls rounders matches were a sell out when Anne was batting. So as you can see for purely academic reasons I am on the side of mixed schools!
