I did that and at least found out what was wrong, but I couldn't fix it myself. Still, it was good to be able to tell the guy so he could bring the correct tools.

Well I managed to increase the pressure.

I watched videos of how to increase it but what they showed was not my boiler had so took a chance, turned a screwy/valve thing and the pressure gauge started going up.

Yes that's your filling loop. Let's mains water flow into the central heating system. To increase the pressure. You either have that or some boilers have a big plastic key. So has this fixed your problem?

No, radiators are still cold

It's not cold here, I just need them hot to dry some clothes.

They come on for a very short while, then go cold again.

No noise, they get warm from the left side of the radiator first for a minute or two & then go cold again.

Central

We had a fault but it was cheaper to get annual cover, which meant they repaired it, serviced it and then other problems for the rest of the year on monthly payment by direct debit. We got cash back from a cash back site too, like quidco or topcashback.

Sounds like the pump has gone... without it the water can't circulate... so boiler burner comes on it heats up standing water which won't take long to tell the boiler it's hot enuf and turns off burner... rads get warm one side then cold due to thermal flow as opposed to pumping around the system...

The hot water tap is a separate system and doesn't mix with the central heating water

Do you have combi boiler or tank in an airing cupboard ??

You need a gasafe engineer as most pumps and other areas to check are located within the boiler housing... it's really hard to diagnose over a forum but at least if they say it's the pump you are aware of it being a possible fault
