Pick one male or female actor, who you really admire for their acting skills, not one you fancy, but think is an amazing actor.

Mine is Spencer Tracy, amazing actor who knew how to be the part and look as though he really was listening and responding to what the other actors were saying on screen.

Merle Oberon which I l now sounds like a mans name.

She was Anglo Indian by heritage and not a natural beauty but neither am I!

She was in the 1930;s Withering Heights along with Lawrence Olivier and equaled him.

Its the only film that has stuck to the spirit of the book and Bronte would recognize

Richard Burton - from my town. Met him when I was a kid, my father played piano in a local nightclub in the 60s and he came to the club on a visit back to Port Talbot. My father played loads of requests for him and they had a long chat afterwards, resulting in my Dad being invited to take me to Burton's local the day after to meet him and some of his family.. A wonderful actor, awesome presence and the best Welsh voice ever!

Joan Cusack was brilliant, I agree. It's definitely in my top ten films. In Bruges was in a similar vein and equally as good.

Even Colin Farrell was good in that film and Ralf Fiennes was fantastic.

I couldn't argue with any of the above names and coming late into the thread it is a bit difficult to find one (does it have to be one?) not already mentioned.

Anyway I will chuck these two into the mix.

From America Robert Duval. Just something about him that makes you always see the character and never the actor.

From the UK I can't understand why no-one has mentioned David Jason. From Granville to Jack Frost he has never put a foot wrong.

Patrick Stewart. He has a ten minute scene in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. His scene is shot in one room, opposite Alec Guinness who is playing George Smiley. Guinness does all of the talking, Stewart not saying a word, just acting with his face. This is a superb scene.

ChrisTOPHer WAlKen is quite HARD to beat. Very FEW, can match HIS delivery of A mundANE line and make it SING like he DOES.

I think it was Brad Pitt who said that Paul Whitehouse was the best actor he had ever worked with.

Not as famous as he should be and certainly doesn't get the recognition he deserves. A very good addition to the list.

I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned Vincent D'onofrio. Hugely versatile and so unrecognisable in some roles you'd have a hard time convincing people its the same actor examples

Torn between Susan sarandon and sally field

People generally think of sally field in her less serious roles but I think her roles in Sybil and eye for an eye and the scenes in steel magnolias where she's reading to her daughter in hospital and at the funeral show she's also underestimated

Mary Elizabeth mastrantonio is great too but has I think missed out on roles due to Hollywood politics.
