Strange abbreviations

Some abbreviations just don't make sense, particularly the place name ones.

Why is Hampshire abbreviated to Hants?

Any answers? Any questions?

Hmmm, you are consistent at least.

Conservative is abbreviated to Con or Tory, which translates to robber/thief/brigand.

On a related note, why don't people accept a place name as defined by the people living there?

Eg the French call London, Londres. We call Koln, Cologne.

Imagine if you were introduced to someone and just chose to ignore their name and call them something else instead...

My name has different pronunciations and a fair few use a different one to the one I use. One of my ex's persisted in this until I explained how unpleasant it was.
