Having too many sick days I can understand. You want reliable staff with a good team attitude. The toilet break rule is a bit harsh and probably illegal.

So you'd be happy working somewhere where all your colleagues go off sick with no consequences leaving you to do their share of the work then?!

The no toilet break thing does sound slightly illegal unless their shift hours are short enough to warrant using break times for all that. I used to work somewhere where you were allowed a certain amount of time a day for 'personal time'. They couldn't really do anything of you went over it but it was flagged and discussed with you.

Agree it sounds harsh but at the other end of the scale you have the public sector, where in parts of it, staff receive very favourable sick pay which can result in some people using it as an extension their annual leave entitlement without any consequence to them. The impact is felt by their colleagues who pick up the extra work.

I used to work for a company that paid people for their sick days. People took the piss and we constantly had to have agency workers called in which cost the company considerably more. Eventually they stopped paying for sick days and got rid of the worst offenders. After that the sickness rate dropped massively.

Where I work is similar.

If you're absent/sick three times in a 12-month rolling period, they consider your attendance to be unsatisfactory and it triggers a process (basically a disciplinary process with a tiered style meeting approach).

Same with my company. I think that's a pretty standard HR/employee policy isn't it.

I don't get paid for taking time off sick. Whilst I agree in principal, we're not androids and occasionally a human being will not be well enough to do a days work. Many people who I work with can't afford to take the day off sick (because they won't get paid), so have to attend work ill whilst still contagious (and feeling like shit) making others ill, in the process.

The rule is fundamentally flawed.

More than likely they will move through the stages of the Absence Policy that will lead ultimately to dismissal, if all the trigger points are hit.

Seems fair as some see Absence Days as an entitlement to have every year.

The trouble with sickness is people drop out easily losing a day here and there that's not fair on their colleagues, the problem is when someone has a genuine sickness they are then penalised which can be unfair, the government ssp isn't really any use either. But as with most things it's the minority that ruins it for the majority.

Central

Its work practices are highly questionable, employing many on zero hours and expecting turn up at the drop of a hat.

Such insecure employment increases I'll health and I'd prefer this company obliterated and replaced by an ethically motivated alternative. Its management are obvious vermin, the scum of the business world.

Decent working conditions should be an absolute minimum for all - this is a hugely profitable company that has chosen to be a bottom feeder. Avoid it, it's a blight on society.

To further deter people from taking a day off sick, you must be free of all symptoms for 48 hrs before returning to work - effectively missing three days' pay.

Needless to say, the only people that take time off sick where I work, are people who are genuinely too ill to go work.

there will be a few who play on sick days, monday club is the most popular, one company i work for had a purge on this a lot have to much to drink weekend and duck monday, if you was self employed you may think twice, as the customer is your employer, and you may not get more work off them

How about tackiling the real issues.Addressing the poor wages, working conditions etc.

Employees are sick for a reason, usually the shit they have to put up with.

I work for one of the largest global employers worldwide and they have decided to take our bonus away from us,leaving the majority of us between £500 to £1000 worse off per month.

Not the guys in suits though, happily paying themselves huge bonuses per month.

It's simply broke a lot of workers who are constantly on the sick due to mental stress. The working class man's getting shafted in this country, that's the real problem.

that seems harsh, have they stopped it or phased it out... a bonus is just that and people should live to their basis, although that is harder than just typing the words.

They phased it out over the period 3 months and replaced it with a new system that was impossible to achieve.

Union reps have told us that they basically want permanent employees with contracts out of the door,to be replaced with agency workers who will be on a minimum wage and have no rights !!

The wage doesn't fit,it really doesn't.

A lot of companies now have some sort of punishment for being off sick, where I work there are disciplinaries are common for you illness and injuries. To add insult to injury, there is no sick pay or industrial injury pay.

We'll you keep voting on govt that strip the unions of rights and powers this is what you get . No doubt the usual suspects will now come on union bashing saying they are all corrupt etc but what rights would we have if nobody had fought for them?

it used to be like that and the piss takers were out of order however its not that way any more, absence management is more strictly enforced now across the public sector..

Hmmmm this is interesting. In the last year I have had 0 days sick, the year before 3 weeks 2 days (due to a broken arm and cold), year before that 2 months due to a mental illness and collapsing

Don't get me wrong if you are genuinely sick then take time off. If you arnt then don't

Sickness is not something you can plan it is what it is and if u was warned over my sickness record I would question the warning

The toilet break rule I heard once was one they used against staff In some job centres, this brought it Home to me how dragonian employers could be towards their staff During the recession and most likely Any other time, with this wave of new Immigrants comeing over here I wonder Where their fortunes lie certainly not At the end of a rainbow, come and join The crowd along with every other tom dick and harry..

Titz Towers, North Notts

This place is a few miles from Titz Towers and I know a few people who have been unlucky enough to work there, including family.

The consensus is that the employer treats the staff with zero dignity and seems determined to suck any pleasure out of doing a shift, simply regarding the workers as mobile energy units.
