Images of snipers on the roof of a complex were circulating as thousands of people were protesting against the planned cuts to tax credit Sunday. Police said they were for "observation" only....Thoughts on this please

There are always snipers on rooftops at party conferences for obvious reasons

Generally I assume armed police are there to protect me rather than shoot me. Am I naïve?

I thought snipers were always in place on these occasions. Is anyone suggesting they were there to shoot protesters?

The fact they were visible is enough to tell you their goal wasn't as sinister as some of the protesters would like us to believe.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Does OP still believe that our police force still operates entirely with truncheons and whistles?

Snipers surrounding a party conference with the prime minister in attendance and Britain on Terror alert. Not exactly a surprise to be honest only takes one active shooter to start running amok and mowing down people protestors and all.

And if the snipers was not there everybody would be moaning about it.

Security at party conferences went serious after the Brighton bombing.

I lived in Blackpool at the time and the conference was there the following year. I saw some sights, including snipers on roof tops.

Never felt that they were out to do harm, just protect

Much like everyone I take comfort and am not at all surprised that snipers were on duty.

I find it stranger that the press want to make a big deal out of it.

If nobody was shot, isn't that proof that "observation" is all that took place?

They are NOT snipers. They are marksmen. If it was a sniper, you wouldn't have seen him.

That would make sense.

Besides, it's not as bad as Labour sending tanks to Heathrow in 2003

(Which just turned out to be more about scaring up a few more votes into taking us into war)

I would rather they were there than not there.

I had someone comment on it today in work. She wasn't best pleased and thought it was too agressive and what if one of them fired by mistake.

I had to explain that they are fully trained and they don't just let any old average Joe be a sniper. It takes years of training and so many back round checks it's unreal (one of my dad's old army friends is a police sniper so that's how I know)

Our armed police are one of the best trained and mentally stable armed officers in the world.

But police officers have been known to fire at innocent people, it isn't an entirely unfounded remark.

With the increased threat of a terrorist attack by Isis, the snipers sadly will be a common thing. Up till now there were there but not seen, don't you love social media.

We keep being told the royal family are our representatives and not the politicians.

So let the politicians run the gamut.

The Daily Mail are already lining up a new Tory leader anyway.

There are those in the USA who might agree.

What are your thoughts?

Having armed police in an area where a lot of people are getting het up about a sensitive issue probably makes sense. The media making a mountain out of a mole hill, making people believe something sinister was going on so that they then perpetuate bull shit across social media does not.

It makes good economic sense. One 60p bullet can save thousands of pounds worth of Tax credits given reasonable cause.

All the people who keep asking if I'd rather have President Blair or Cameron representing me when I mention I'm a republican.

I doubt if they were there to pick out marchers to shoot. Police marksmen are there to try and protect.

Does it really surprise you?

Walk around Whitehall and you will notice, in the most discreet ways possible, just what a bomb proof, surveilled and patrolled area it is.

Cops with M-16s are rare in this country by de rigueur a Downing Street

I don't see what the issue is. It's a security operation and they are there for observation purposes and gathering intelligence....and to ensure security!! Don't see anyone moaning about all the Guardsmen deployed around the palace with SA 80s?

The country has numerous security threats at the moment and I doubt very much they are deployed to deal with austerity protestors.

M-16s are so 1980's. All about the Heckler and Koch these days in London Town.

Trying to find a litter bin in central London is a pain in the ass!!
