Hello everyone! I just wanted to know your feelings on messages that are just so poorly written (grammar, nonsensical words, no punctuation, etc.) that you can barely make sense of them. We generally try to respond to all messages, but if we can't understand the message it becomes increasingly hard to respond properly. As such, we really value and enjoy our conversations with people who write thought-out messages with substance and wit.

Being as that this is a site often based around messaging, how important is it for you that someone is eloquent in their messaging, or does it even make a difference?

Some are hard to read and understand, and I just tend to write pardon then if the second one is bad I delete

It's quite simple. If I can't understand a message I don't reply. I don't give it a seconds thought to be honest.

We are usually about the same. A polite, "We couldn't understand your message." If the reply isn't better we don't bother.

I like eloquent and proper grammar, if figure if they can't write properly they properly can't speak properly either so I delete the messages.

And text speech, I don't get it, what's wrong with spelling out the whole word

If I can't understand they may get sent a questioning statement or just a question mark.

But if we cant communicate it doesn't bode well for getting on, in all probability.

It is fairly surprising, how many people, are borderline illiterate. It seems unkind to judge people on their lack of certain ability, but I suppose we all do it. If you were to meet any of these people, in an everyday environment, you may find them charming and attractive, and definitely choose to meet again. You may have no idea about their reading/writing difficulties.

the way I look at it some are good at the written word and some are not until you meet a person or persons you have really no idea wether they are people whose company you would enjoy ,surely we are about meeting so my point is a few misspelled words really have no bearing on the people ,ok its annoying sometimes but that's all really

We feel that lack of effort in a message might well equal lack of effort in a meet. It's as much about being able to provide some mental stimulation for us.

I get the mental image of one of the Muppets (Kermit) mashing his head into the keyboard and then sweeping it back and forth. That certainly will make me smile reading those messages in the future!

This is very similar to some of the messages that we get. It is difficult to even try to make reasonable responses. Glad to see that we aren't being too harsh with asking for clarification.

There is a book called, Perfect Written English printed by Random House.

Thank you for that i will look into getting a copy of that book .

my problem stems from going off the rails from 13 to 16 and throwing away those years. then working in a job where English and writing skills were not necessary from the age of 16 if you don't practise a skill you can lose it and forget much of what you learned .

Shock as people communicating via the writen word are judged on their ability to use the written word.

I get plenty of messages from "straight" blokes, very late at night, no doubt under the influence of substances. It's the only reason I can think of that explains the awful grammar, spelling and manners in their missives. Plenty of them go UNLOS the next day as well.

Until I found out about the filters I had the same issues. It seems some men not only thought but typed with their penis too.

For myself I prefer at least a reasonable level of grammar and well constructed messages. At least to begin with though I am far from being a grammar nazi. I despise the deliberate modern misspellings of words...though I have a friend who does it on social media to fit in despite having read English at university.

I find intelligence attractive, so someone who can get and hold my attention with a message will more than likely get a response

The vast majority of communication on this site is done by way of the written word. Therefore it stands to reason that someone who uses that medium well and makes a great effort in this regard will make for a more successful candidate than someone who does not bother to check and make an effort.

None of this has anything to do with the very few people who actually have learning difficulties which prevent them from writing coherent sentences.

It is a sad reality that many people who simply cannot be bothered to learn make out that they have learning difficulties and thus muddy the ground for those who have genuine problems in this area and are struggling to communicate and be accepted.

Unwilling and unable are two different things.

That said those who did not get taught properly as youngsters need to be encouraged to develop and not shamed for their deficiencies.

Doesnt bother me too much as I understand that there are people that use the site, that have conditions such as Aspergers, Autism and dyslexia, which can effect the way they communicate and also, that most people use the site via their mobiles and autocorrect can be a curse (my iPhone seems to have Tourette's) so I will over look a fair bit as long as its eligible enough to understand what they meant by what they were writing
