So a baby has been born from a woman with a transplanted womb (her mother's donated womb) after hers was removed due to cancer.

Now I wonder if this means in future a womb could be transplanted into a man or transgender person, I imagine the baby would have to be born via c section because of a lack of "strech" as it where for the lower half

Do you think this would be possible or do you think the male body would just be incapable of supporting a second life

I feel ill when I eat too much, I don't think I could hold a baby in me.

"I feel ill when I eat too much, I don't think I could hold a baby in me. "

That properly made me snort!

I think medical stuff is beyond me but I love that they can do this for people who have suffered and they can experience that joy.

Artificial sperm and eggs can be made from skin cells.

So you could have both sperm and eggs from a same sex couple.

So yes, I think it's only a matter of time, not in the next few years but certainly in the future.

I can't see it being safe for the baby. A woman has all the hormones needed for growing a baby. Could they inject them into a man and would a man's body change like a woman's does to accommodate the baby?

Babies born from a transplanted womb have to be delivered by caesarian section anyway I understand and I suppose the necessary hormones could be given to a man (no idea what that would do to him long term) so yes, I reckon it could happen.

I'd love to see it become possible for transgender people.

I have absolutely no medical knowledge mind you.

I imagine a cocktail of hormones would be required to make the male body hospitable to a foetus, which alongside anti-rejection drugs would have a very powerful impact on the man.

A man's skeleton isn't meant for carrying a baby. We have wide hips especially for carrying babies.

Cool let's ban antibiotics and go back to people dying at 40.

Better ban condoms too eh?

I hadn't thought about the hormone issue I was thinking more along the lines of our metabolisms and circulatory systems etc

I think it's great for its purpose, I really don't see howma man could carry a baby though a transgender would of had all the hormones to turn them into a woman so I could see that would be viable, but I can't see how a regular man could possibly carry a baby without being given female hormones and goodness knows what that would do to him.

The hormones would probably alter his metabolism significantly, and I don't believe there is too much anatomical difference circulatory wise between men and women. And a c-section would definitely be necessary for most men.

Yes then a hysterectomy is performed when/if baby is 6 months old unless a 2nd child is planned

Treating cancer?

Not very natural let them die.

C section births?

Nah nature clearly wants the child dead.

Saving a child from infection?

No let the bacteria do their thing.

Because there are people who would be willing to pay.

After all we researched and developed a way of removing the skins an tissue from the back of a woman's head to then individually divide out the hair roots to implant them back into the woman's eyebrows after she has destroyed them via over plucking.

There's money in some weird avenues of research

Now that they are discussing it for the NHS I suppose we would have to look at it for everyone who is unable to have a child and wants one.

From what I have skim read, the rejection rate would be about the same as any other organ.

I had large fibroids and an hysterectomy too. It was a really long operation to remove it so I can only imagine it's double that to implant one.

The Swedish case raised an intestine issue though, the main problems for women with age is the ovaries not the womb so the woman used her mother's (the child's grandmother) that should reduce the level of rejection a lot.

And I suppose many mothers who aren't planning on anymore kids would donate to their daughters.

"I saw the womb transplant birth news a few months ago; I think there was even a thread on here.

Now that they are discussing it for the NHS I suppose we would have to look at it for everyone who is unable to have a child and wants one.

There was a Sky Arts play with Stephen Mangan about this.

How complicated was the surgery? I had my womb removed and I was in agony for weeks, although I had very large fibroids on mine. Is there a chance of rejection like there is with other organs?

That would be fantastic for transgender women but I can't see many men asking if they can carry a baby for 9 months. No beer, soft cheese, prawns etc and heartburn!

"So a baby has been born from a woman with a transplanted womb (her mother's donated womb) after hers was removed due to cancer.

Now I wonder if this means in future a womb could be transplanted into a man or transgender person, I imagine the baby would have to be born via c section because of a lack of "strech" as it where for the lower half

Do you think this would be possible or do you think the male body would just be incapable of supporting a second life

Personally I think people should stop playing God and just let nature run as its supposed to

Cool let's ban antibiotics and go back to people dying at 40.

Better ban condoms too eh?

I hadn't thought about the hormone issue I was thinking more along the lines of our metabolisms and circulatory systems etc

Oh I'm sorry I didn't realise I was only allowed an opinion so long as I was infavour of your post

I really hate this emoticon but I really feel in this case it's needed

So what class as "stop playing god and let nature take its course"

Treating cancer?

Not very natural let them die.

C section births?

Nah nature clearly wants the child dead.

Saving a child from infection?

No let the bacteria do their thing.

Our of curiosity where is the line ?

If I thought I could reply to that and have an adult discussion about it I would, but your antibiotic and condom comment clearly shows you'd just rip to bits any opinion I have so best not bother"

It's a stupid opinion though. We play god far more though our treatment of disease than our quest for repoducrion.

But the whole "nature take its course" argument is nonsense when to humans.

We are collectively a species that has invested tens of thousands of man hours into developing better lubricants to fuck each other in the arse.

What's natural to humans is insanity if looked at through a practical eye.

I can't see anyone spending money trying to get a man to carry a baby. It will never happen because we will never run out of women

People will try to see if we can.

After all we never run out of people so why bother trying to perform a head transplant like we are?

Is someone really trying to do that?

Yeah I think it's planned for next year.

We've been trying since the 60s though.

Which animal will they be experimenting on or have they already done that? I don't know if I want to know

Japan transplanted a dogs head onto another dog, they didn't remove the other head though so it was walking round with two heads

And they both worked?

Yes they put two bowls of food down and both head ate

I remember having lecture about it at uni many years ago

"

Only two headed dog I can find is Demikhov's. They were some pretty horrific experiments and all obviously died after a few days.

There are YouTube videos though if you Google Demikhov.

I really don't understand surgery of any sort that is purely cosmetic. General anaesthetic messes with your system for weeks and months afterwards. Your body has to work so hard to adjust after surgery.

I accept that people can and some want to but the results often look so much less human I find it odd.

That's not true and it's ducking stupid.

Cancer has always existed and not just in humans it exists in animals never exposed to industry.

The problem is we used to tend to die before cancer developed.

Now we've eliminated so many reasons for death our bodies simply fucking up is the main cause.

If I give you a copy of say the complete works of Shakespeare and tell you to copy it out a thousand times.

You will eventually make a mistake.

This is all cancer is a transcription error, only difference is you're asking your body to copy out a text that is about 3 billion characters long several trillion times.

You seriously think it was gonna do it perfectly?

Our entire existence is based on the premise it will go wrong and cause mutations.

Or next are you going to say evolution is non existent too?

Oh on the topic of cancer there is one interesting thing about them.

Some Cancer cells are essentially immortal.

They go on capable of dividing and growing indefinitely telomeres never shortening with each generation.

So if we can harness this ability and move it to our normal cells cane could provide the answer to human immortality.

Least from old age and the degregation associated with it.

Treating cancer?

Not very natural let them die.

C section births?

Nah nature clearly wants the child dead.

Saving a child from infection?

No let the bacteria do their thing.

Our of curiosity where is the line ?

If I thought I could reply to that and have an adult discussion about it I would, but your antibiotic and condom comment clearly shows you'd just rip to bits any opinion I have so best not bother

Are you saying it's not natural to fuck arseholes? I've fucked the odd one or two . Seriously though, if animals do it, why is it considered unnatural?

"So a baby has been born from a woman with a transplanted womb (her mother's donated womb) after hers was removed due to cancer.

Do you think this would be possible or do you think the male body would just be incapable of supporting a second life

"

Thinking about the hormones required to even begin to make this viable...might it cure male pattern baldness as a much more vital, if unintended, side-effect? That would truly be scientific progress to be proud of!

What worries me most about this is how many failed attempts will there be before they get it right (if they ever do) how many eggs will be fertilised to die at various stages of gestation? How many babies will be fertilised and die, and is this acceptable so long as one day that man carries the baby he wants?

Less than the number killed by the morning after pill each year?"

How do you know the morning after pill works? I have proof it fails. No pregnancy following the morning after pill does not prove conception occurred in the first place.

"Science doesn't do morals

That's left to politicans

Science does progress, whether you like it or not is a different question, I love science it's my God, we do such great mind bogglingly amazing things and find answers to what we've gazed at and wondered about for years!.

So yeah we do genetically altered wheat and hydraulic fracturing and thermo nuclear weapons but knowing and abusing are two different things!

I've been looking at fusors lately, tricky but not massively complicated to build. There's a certain draw to having the power of a star sat on your desk.

Expensive pointless curiosity though, but probably cheaper than a good painting lol..

Ahh the fusion goal, it's annoying and amazing!

They keep saying another 20 years and we've got it grrr.

It's more of an engineering problem in reality than a science one... Temperatures and limits!.

Never seen a small fusor but I have visited the big one in France!

Ps

Hirsch wrote some very good books on oil and its limits!"

A fusor is a specific type that can be built and operated at home, it will never produce net energy though, but they look truly beautiful when operating in "star mode".

And sorry to say mate the current goal for DEMO after iteration to actually produce power is 50 years minimum :p

Lockheed are going for a compact high beta reactor which eliminates a whole host of the problems with low beta reactors like the tokomak iter style ones, but at the same time introduces an equal number of equally challenging different problems lol.

I find the design for the blankets for the inside of the reactors an incredible feat, must absorb fast neutrons without degrading significantly, idealy breed tritium.

one Side facing plasma at millions of kelvin the other side facing the super conducting magnets at a fraction of a single kelvin.

It's a mind boggling specification

I'll rephrase that - it's not a contraception if an egg has already been released from the ovary. The IUD is as it prevents a fertilised egg implanting in the womb, and condoms are as they prevent sperm from entering the vagina (when used carefully).

I'm not entirely sure what your point is here.

Are you trying to say the morning after pill never works.

that an egg that is fertilised will not be prevented from growing by the effects of the pill.

That was all my point was, I just figured the morning after pill was a more salient example than say abortion due to it not suffering from the same problems relating to how long after fertilisation is aceptable.

OK which is of no really relevance.

There's proof that it works, there's proof that it's used.

So it's a reasonable assumption that more fertilised eggs will be prematurely ended by the morning after pill than by experiments a tempting to gestation a baby in a male .

Don't you think?

Fair enough my apologies.

I thought it prevented the fertilise degg from attaching to the wall of the womb but you're correct it delays the release of the egg.

Guess sill have to use abortion for my point but that opens up a much more sticky side track

That was all my point was, I just figured the morning after pill was a more salient example than say abortion due to it not suffering from the same problems relating to how long after fertilisation is aceptable.

It doesn't destroy a fertilised egg.

Fair enough my apologies.

I thought it prevented the fertilise degg from attaching to the wall of the womb but you're correct it delays the release of the egg.

Guess sill have to use abortion for my point but that opens up a much more sticky side track "

It's the iud that prevents attachment. The morning after pill is not a viable option if ovulation has already occurred, I hope to god that doctors explain this to the women concerned, and not just that if they're sick that they have a greater chance of conception occurring.

Can we all agree that the morning after pill works in a statistically-significant majority of cases that would, without alternative interventions or complications, result in viable pregnancies and babies born?

I would think they would explain it and the other options.

I'll admit when it comes to female contraception etc I'm operating of things I learned over a decade ago in school as it's not something I've ever had to read up on in later life lol.
