Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I'm thinking of taking the sleeper train up to Edinburgh next week.

Has anyone used it? Is it vile, better than sitting up in a chair all night or better than you expected?

That won't work. I'm doing it to do something I have NEVER done before. I've never been on a sleeper train in a berth.

Do you sleep in a carriage with three other people?

I think you should do it, sounds romantic.

I did it a few yrs a go try to book a cabin if you can as the seats dont go back very far they put the lights out after 1st stop and if you want a drink in night the guard makes it free of charge

That's the idea.

I have a couple of weeks off, with some odd days not accounted for, so I thought I would have an adventure.

There's a shop in Edinburgh called Lickety Splits so I should go and find it.

Or should I book a double berth and try and arrange a strangers on a train meet?

Its a long time since i took the train to edinburgh. I travelled 1st and 3 rd class. 1st had padding at either end of birth which reduced space for my 6 foot 3 frame so i was much more comfortable travelling 3 rd. Guards were wonderful. Would provide coffee aspirin or scotch all throgh the night but make sure you tip them well

Thanks! I assume they would turf me off the train if I slept in.

Now to find a nice hotel in Edinburgh and make some plans to see stuff.

always used to use it for business. Catch the 23:00 out of Euston, its all a bit tired and tatty nowadays, but very relaxing and the community of fascinating people that travel regularly on the sleepers to Glasgow, Fort Bill and Edinburgh are wonderful. A great shame that they don't refurbish the carriages and the cabins

if you are thinking of traveling in the ordinery coach you MUST book a seat as it is limited availability . have used this several times and had no problem sleeping apart from when train splits at edinboro . seats are comphy enough and blindfolds are provided (kinky) i pod with quiet music blots out any noise and rolling action of the train soon has you away with the fairies

I got a sleeper train to Italy once. I was in a top berth which was great cos I could observe the others and not be too disturbed - it was like in bunk cabaret!

Don't expect too much sleep or it to be too good quality, and don't have any expectations of those around you. Hopefully you'll find it entertaining.

Wear something comfy and easy to change. Take thick socks to keep your toes toasty and so you don't get cold feet on the way to the loo.

I was able to get my luggage on my berth with me instead of having to park it under the bottom one (I'm not tall either...) which was handy.

Pack snacks.

Enjoy, it's an experience and I thoroughly enjoyed mine. In fact I'm a bit envious.

i liked them.....

if you go as a single person you always end up sharing with a person of the same sex,

and sometimes you can upgrade to your own single berth.....

getting a berth is still much better than a seat.. even if the seat does recline a little more than a normal seat would.....

To book alone, you're effectively booking first class and it is more expensive but I wouldn't be sharing a sleeper carriage with a random although you would get another female.

Central

I love sleeper trains but haven't used British ones - but the feedback I've heard about the Scottish one is generally good.

I fly a lot too but the option of arriving in the centre of a city, refreshed after a reasonably good nights sleep and rest: assuming you're in bed and actually sleeping, rather than something else, is appealing. No hassle of getting to and from airports - and Edinburgh airport used to be a hassle. Though think the transport link may be improved now.

Have a great trip, before these services disappear.

It is, or used to be, so quick the train sat outside the destination (King's Cross usually in my case) till a sensible hour to take the passengers into the station.

As I recall, you even got a voucher for a shower in the station heads.

Has anyone used it? Is it vile, better than sitting up in a chair all night or better than you expected?

"

£115 for a berth and you may have to share with someone of same sex. Which is a great way to meet new people, but a shit way if your travelling with a d*unk

seats are rubbish .

Used it a few times when in London and have to be in Scotland the next day .

Other than that is fly cattle class which is totally shit compare to a train .

My suggestion is see when military bands are playing in London and in Scotland

I never get a choice, just what I am offered. Yes it's usually a good way .to travel , I very rarely travel on my own, but I would have taken the shared room as at least it's someone to hang out with.

Not done a sleeper but 1st class on Berlin to Prague was marvellous

A full compartment to ourselves in a rickety old carriage was just wonderful.

Plush red seats, curtains and liveried guards.

I half expected Poirot popping up.

It's the toilets and having a shower that are worrying me.

My home shower blew up (about 20 years ago) and I spent a week using the showers in the head at Glasgow Central Station. Not a happy experience.

Little control over water direction led to flooding out under the door + the place attracted jakies and alkies.

Fuck it... pack some baby wipes or go up to the hotel and leave your bag there if you can't check in. They have a spa so blag it and ask if you can have a swim then use the facilities there.

I hope to find the Lickety Splits shop and get a picture there.

I've had someone tell me I have to find a certain stone and spit on it. I won't be doing that.

"I'm thinking of taking the sleeper train up to Edinburgh next week.

Has anyone used it? Is it vile, better than sitting up in a chair all night or better than you expected?

I did it a few yrs a go try to book a cabin if you can as the seats dont go back very far they put the lights out after 1st stop and if you want a drink in night the guard makes it free of charge

Will the guard deliver whisky to me?

Its a long time since i took the train to edinburgh. I travelled 1st and 3 rd class. 1st had padding at either end of birth which reduced space for my 6 foot 3 frame so i was much more comfortable travelling 3 rd. Guards were wonderful. Would provide coffee aspirin or scotch all throgh the night but make sure you tip them well

At 5' I shouldn't have that problem.

Don't worry if there's no beds, they'll just put you in a drawer. "

Catch up, I fell out of the bed.

I'll take her in the morning.

Sounds like you've had a top day lovely! I didn't like to mention the club... I've never been but I've walked past it and it looks a tad seedy. The gang in the Scottish forum will likely give you an idea, there's a thread up about people going tonight.

It's a lovely city but everything is on four levels.

If only!

I had a swim then had alcohol to numb the pain and now I'm swaddled in the fluffy robe eating tablet!

I could do with a massage.

"I'd better get onto the Scottish forum and find out what's happening up there.

Or should I book a double berth and try and arrange a strangers on a train meet? "

That sounds fab a double birth and a selected group of men taking it in turns to play all through the trip.

Far better than sleeping.

Roof top pool or inside?

The hydro baths by the side of the pool are great. Also very easy to fall asleep in the quiet relaxing area.

Anything on at the Usher Hall while you are there? Rsno season started?

Waiting for Godot is on at the Lyceum.

I'd recommend it to the OP, saw it a couple of weekends ago - excellent production.

We're nutters!!! My 40th & my Dad's 60th. We're coming up for the last night if the tattoo again & don't want to stay with family near Meadowbank as way too restrictive & the boys are coming too. It's only for a few nights over our bank holiday. I've not booked it so will check with my dad exactly where it is. We had to cancel our 1st apartment as my brother was getting married that weekend but moved to week before!!

The train is stuck. Something has happened on the train ahead and they are waiting for an ambulance.

At least my feet have had a break but doing nothing on a train is exhausting.

Or maybe just tie you down.....
