"Don't they say that those in high powered jobs such as bankers verge on sociopath tendencies . No that's psychopaths! Ones a genetic fault and ones a nurture fault, although they both use the same outcome, they come from different paths!" That's why I wonder if it is just a matter of educational attainment, albeit probably linked to class. Psychopaths have the veneer of society, the good jobs, the education and it's deemed to be genetic. Sociopaths have the ASBOS, lower educational attainment and it's deemed to be a result of their upbringing.

"Don't they say that those in high powered jobs such as bankers verge on sociopath tendencies . No that's psychopaths! But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there.

" People in high positions of power tend more to have traits that are closer to the psychopathic personality disorder than the population generally. Both of these types of people may never physically harm anyone but emotional and psychological anguish may be dished out aplenty to others. All in all, you'll potentially not get the deeply intimate relationships with them that you might otherwise cultivate with a different partner. It's a bit late, so I don't feel I've probably done a great job at explaining them - but our understanding is still somewhat shallow too. We don't know that much about our brains, minds, social interaction and developmental as well as genetic influences upon us yet." You've done as well, and better, than anything else posted. I have wondered whether the internet leads to us connecting more with our inner psychopath.

You like to carefully weigh up the pros and cons of a situation before you act and are generally averse to taking risks. You are very much a ‘people person’ and dislike conflict. ‘Do unto others…’ are your watchwords. But, although you avoid hurting others, those residing at the higher end of the psychopathic spectrum might not be as considerate, so stay vigilant to avoid being hurt unnecessarily.

"Sociopaths and psychopaths both face medical disorders that can be treated or alleviated if properly diagnosed. Treatment involves therapies and may involve proper medication. In fact, psychiatrists often don't distinguish between the two based on behavior; instead, they label a person with ASPD a sociopath if their mental condition is a result of mainly social conditions like abuse during childhood and a psychopath if the condition is mainly congenital." I went with psycho being of the brain and socio being of society when I made up my answer

"I wouldn't hold much sway with the online types of tests that can be done, whether via channel 4 or whoever. We'll have our own inherent cognitive biases that will influence our results, whereas a trained individual who is professionally able to assess you is going to be much more appropriate and accurate. The nature vs nurture influences upon these and other traits is typically assessed via studies of twins. They would compare twins who've been separated at birth with twins who haven't been, and observe the incidences of such traits amongst them and whether separation affects this. In other words, if separated twins have matching traits, then the trait is likely to be genetic or due to some experience in the womb." I don't think anyone was taking the test seriously. That said, since taking it the first time and then last night there have been changes in my life and I did have a little think about whether losing that harder, colder edge might be why I am doing slightly different work these days.

"Causes: In short, the jury's out... but... Psychopathy and sociopathy are anti-social personality disorders. While both these disorders are the result of an interaction between genetic predispositions and environmental factors, psychopathy is used when the underlying cause leans towards the hereditary. Sociopath is the term used when the antisocial behavior is a result of a brain injury or belief system and upbringing. In recent years, the term psychopath has acquired a specific meaning and the condition is now more widely understood." I thought they were the same thing. I believe Sociopath was a phrase coined in the late 19th century.

You’re no shrinking violet - but no daredevil either. You generally have little trouble seeing things from another person’s perspective but, at the same time, are no pushover. ‘Everything in moderation – including moderation’ might sum up your approach to life. I know because my brother is one and has been "Away" for 20 years. I have a borderline personality disorder. Its the above emotions which make us different.

"Psychopaths kill you with knives, sociopaths beat you to death. Why though? Not why do they kill you but why do they use those methods? A psychopath will use his/her brain to devise a way of killing you quickly and not get caught. A sociopath will just want to kill you won't have thought about the consequences. "I work in this area, and particularly with people with Anti-Social Personality Disorders. Psychopathy is very different to ASPD and treated (if at all) by very different methods. Broadly speaking, people with ASPD are still capable of empathy and can therefore be treated by behavioral psychotherapy methods - Dialectic and Mentalization Based being the current best research methods. Psychopaths, if able to respond to treatment at all, tend to use more psychodynamic approaches. Sociopathy is not generally used as a diagnosis in this country. HTH"

"Psychopaths kill you with knives, sociopaths beat you to death. Why though? Not why do they kill you but why do they use those methods? " i feel psychopaths is wielding personal 'power' from sense of freedom to be 'able' to do so.. sociopaths wield 'personal power' from their sense of insecurity..and therefore punishment/blame..hence why one would just kill with a knife, and one would actually stand there and beat you to death..having lived with the latter..i know that's where his stemmed from, so its an educated guess, as to the similarities and differences...

Ex SAS author. Along with Kevin Dutton, they covered areas for developing good psychopathy as a self help guide for developing the ability to make decisions faster and more effectively by assessing situations better. "I'm pretty sure my step father is a psychopath. To the outside world he is charming, gregarious, excellent to have around in an emergency, strong social conscience. In private it's a very different story and he's highly manipulative, and takes pleasure in head games. Most rpeople aren't even aware when he's fucking with them. When I was about 10 we were in the garden feeding my rabbits when my dad's cat appeared from next door. Step father said we ought to kill it to keep the rabbits safe, and made me choose to kill it or let it live. I didn't know what to do, his language was very leading and I knew he wanted me to say yes, so I did as I was afraid not to despite feeling horrified at the thought. He cut it in half with a garden shovel. In manipulating me into making that decision he ensured my collaboration and loyalty for years as we had this hideous secret, and he exhibited a cruelty that made me afraid to challenge him. " Was no-one else horrified reading this. That must have been pretty traumatic for you...

Absolutely - this was a terrible thing that she was forced to do, as a child, without the freedom of choice that we'd have as adults. I was sickened when I read it earlier, on the move. It makes me so angry that this horrible excuse for an adult, with parental responsibilities would have abused his position of trust in such a vile way.

"Bankers? Not really, drs and vets have an underlying sense of empathy and compassion. Being able to kill something doesn't necessarily determine ones mental state. " That they can disconnect from it at all is psychopathic tendencies, when they reconnect, they do feel shame and pity etc. I did read your previous message about your brother, so I am aware of where you're coming from about the switching I mentioned previously, however, it has also been mentioned that sociopathy is not a diagnosis here in the UK. "The standard classification of disease tool is ICD-10 which does use both terms and both are classified under the broad heading of Anti-Social Personslity Disorder. That by no means implies all ASPD sufferers are psychopaths in fact only a small number and a tiny number hit the severe psychopathic disorder criteria that is more controversial. But in essence all Psychopaths have ASPD just a extreme manifestation " The ICD-10, like the DSM-V, is an extremely broad tool. Research into Personality Disorder has grown exponentially in recent years and the separation of psychopathy from ASPD is now generally accepted in psychology terms,

"They're not really separate though. All psychopaths have an extreme personaity disorder Apsd is an umbrella of which various disorders come under." Well, there are certainly different views. At the last meeting to decide the symptoms and traits of various personality disorders for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders several eminent psychiatrists and psychologists walked out because definitions couldn't be agreed upon - this illustrative of the disagreements even within experts in the field. This is still a very nascent area of research of which I believe we are at the forefront here in the UK. The point of view which entirely separates ASPD from psychopathy is prevalent in forensic thinking currently.
