You hear someone scream outside your house. What would you do?

For starters look out the window - we often have kids playing outside ours and they scream

little house on the praire

Depends, time of day, whether it was an adult or child. If it was the middle of the night I'd look out the window

North Wales

Screaming kids out here too. If it concerned me, I'd look out the window and then call the police if I thought it was something serious.

Other than that, I'd do the British thing and hide bravely behind the curtains

The amount of people who report a scream and it turns out to be a fox is unreal! They do sound very human in distress when they're in mating season though. I always go to my window when i hear a weird noise outside as i'm the type to open my window and tell people to fuck off or shut up or clean up their mess. Doesn't happen much in my street anymore. People know better.

Same round here. I told them to be careful as one day they might be screaming for real and no-one would come to help them.

Go out and see whats going on?

Most wouldn't I know but then most people wouldn't intervene

If they see someone getting beaten up.

I love to wade in on other people's unfair fight

I would look outside to see what is going on, then follow up with appropriate action

Regularly get a fox screaming. I think it's quite a distinctive sound. The frogs scream too

Look out the window and see what's what, then take it from there...

Depending on what's happening I might hide or go outside.

Have a look to see who is screaming and why. It's usually d*unk people arguing. We rarely have children screaming outside the window,we're on a busy road.

Lock and load. If you scream this far out in the sticks it's for a reason.

Or it's an owl/fox.

Round here you can tell people to shut the fuck up if they're making a noise outside your house. If I lived in a place like the Harry brown film I would shit myself every night.

bradford

happened so much on my street so just normally looked

I have said to younger ones not to do it as they may need to do it for real

I can tell the difference between a normal play scream and one thats a person in need of help or aid as ive come across it many a time

a hurt childs scream is very unnerving and everyone looks when it happens and come to ask if they are ok or not

an adult one is a piercing shriek when in distress

I'd go outside to find out what was wrong.

If someone screamed round here it would mean something was actually amiss.

I'd be horrified and look out the window the probably go outside to see. It would be very unusual.

I know someone who heard a girl screaming in an alley way next to their house, the woman who owned the house ignored it as the kids often scream for fun. When it was revealed the screaming was from a woman being raped, the owner had a mental breakdown due to doing nothing about it.

I heard somewhere that rather than scream for 'help', someone should scream 'fire' as more people will react to the word fire than the word help.

"You hear someone scream outside your house. What would you do?"

I'd have to go out there and check everything was OK .

I can't imagine or get my head around why anyone would do any differently .

I guess it comes down to empathy and a imagination what if it was me or someone I personally knew out there screaming out in fear.

Once you think like, that you really have no choice but to go out there and see what its all about .

Depends on the time of day & the type of scream. Look out of the window 1st, go outside if I felt safe to do so.

It's been doing the rounds before that. I was told years ago in a police talk to the youth club that's what women should shout instead of help.

I read that too. I just Googled it. A report said that in a panic we'd just scream for help anyway and forget about screaming fire. If people are going to ignore shouts it doesn't matter what they shout.

To be honest if I heard screaming I would definitely be concerned as I live on a private farm in middle of nowhere. I would go out and check the horses are ok. But I like to think the old farmer would come out with his shotgun!
