In the film 'starship troopers' society was divided into two groups of people those who did military service (known as citizens) and those who haven't done military service (called civilians).

Citizens are considered with higher estime and are given better paid jobs and superior welfare benefits owing to the fact they protected society with their lives.

Although this is a science fiction film, do you think that the military veterans should be treated as a superior member of society?

It might also be a prelude to bringing back national service as an alternative for school leavers to either find employment or do national service as opposed school leavers to living off state benefits

In intellectual terms? Not wishing to offend our veterans or our country in any way, I sometimes wonder why someone who decides that they are willing to put their life on the line and willing to kill other people at the whim of politicians should be treated in any way as superior.

Madness..theres too much money spent on the military as it is. And they haven't made anything better, but worse imo. Especially as they are being controlled by large corporations behind the scenes.

I think you're confusing the armed forces with the government.

The armed forces are under-funded and it's successive governments that keep sending them off to fight that are making things worse.

I'm proud that I served for longer than that. Yes I saw some horrific things and had to do some terrible stuff but on the whole I feel everything was worthwhile and for the benefit of my fellow man. I'd still be doing it if I could.

I wouldn't want or accept special treatment though.

Absolutely. I give great respect to a soldier who has put his life at risk to rescue others. I do not classify a soldier who has stood on a land mine as a hero. The latter should be given as much help as possible but no more or less respect than a victim of a house fire or a road traffic accident.

So only the armed forces?..there are other professions that put their lives in danger, or are there to save people.

As much respect as I can give to people who have a career in the forces(my father was one), I dont believe in many of the conflicts we have entered into around the world...so in that respect, I have no respect for their reasons being there in the first places as I believe they are there the benefit of big business..oil/politics.

Sometimes I think people want to go back to days of conscription...fucking wake up to the society around you and see that its not perfect and its not great..but sending kids or teens into military training to improve them as people?...yeahh...thats gonna be a brilliant idea it'll solve everything...even the fact that the military will be automating much more in the future anyway with varying types of drones.

automation is the next big thing..10's of thousands of jobs will be gone in a few decades max...its a sad fact but its true..so think another way of a perfect society cos it aint military and many manual jobs will be gone.

sounds like sci-fi doesnt it..

Exactly. None of these people are financially valued because they take care of burdens that have no monetary value.

As for OP, i do think people in the army shouldn't be cast aside as useless once they become useless in that role. But as the above shows nobody values those who have no financial value.

Narcissistic rulers promote very stange ideals, most of us buy into them. Not me, but enough to push the way society goes on how these people are treated.

My children are not here to serve the state, i didn't have them for that reason, their lives will be theirs and no-one will ever steal their lives or force them to anything.

If I went across the galaxy and went toe to toe with the things in the films then yes definitely. In the real world no.

All veterans get respect of me for what they have been through and perhaps more than your average Joe. But not perks like that.

Counselling housing and training for civilian life yes.

Well actually this was the situation in ancient Greek city kingdoms. The only people considered citizens and allowed to vote were the free men who were by default the soldiers of the city state. Think Spartans.

Personally feel current and former military personnel not respected or looked after enough.

At least I can do my bit by opening my legs for them!

No one should be held in higher esteem based on their job alone.

There's plenty of service personnel who've done very little in their career, whereas doctors or nurses or even a shop assistant has provided a huge service to people or committed time to charity work etc.

A ridiculous idea from an ex serviceman.

They also happily lobbed babies of a cliff if they didn't fit their idea of physical perfection. Not great role models.

No but i would say their does seem to be a large number of ex servicemen on the street. Not all are genuine of course. But before we put more money into the milatary id like to see money put towards ending homelessness xx

As ex- military, I would say no, I have gained a lot personally by my Army service.

However, there is one thing that should be done;

We invest time and money into training servicemen for their roles, not just their trades, but military training is designed to teach you to do various things that civilians don't do ( or don't do legally)

It is also possible to become "institutionalized" in the Forces.

Many of the things you learn, stand you in good stead outside ( self- sufficiency, confidence, leadership, initiative), but some are inappropriate for life "outside".

We should invest a lot more time and effort in " de-training/ retraining" military before they leave, reinforcing the " good" traits, and "training out" the "bad" traits. Especially for those who have been in combat.

There are a lot of ex servicemen with severe mental issues as a result of what they have seen and done, who are dumped on the "real world" with no coping strategy, and little support . There are a number of charities who help, but this should be a properly funded programme .

Everybody, even medics, are trained to kill, and everybody's role supports killing, even indirectly.

Everyone takes joint responsibility; even if you don't shoot/ bayonet someone yourself.
