FabSwingers.com forum: Why is it so hard?

Is anyone else like me that finds it really hard to spend money on themselves but so easy to spend money on their children? We've currently been thinking of a weekend away on our own. We initally thought of a London theatre break then saw that we could fly to Amsterdam and have 3 nights hotel for the same price - we thought great lets do that, then reality hits and you remember you have children and I just can't book it thinking I should be spending both the time and money doing something with them. It's not like we don't go away with them or we can't really afford it, yet on the other hand I've spent over £1000 on trips this year for them with the school and other clubs they go to without so much as a second thought, anyone else like this or am I just over thinking it.

You're not alone in thinking that.

Maybe think of it as a family budget. They had their share now you have yours. No doubt they will have a brilliant time while you are away. (I don't mean they don't enjoy your time too.)

A change is good. You will all enjoy it.

And be refreshed when you return.

Go for it. Kids love time being spoilt by relatives while you're away so it's like a holiday for them too.

I'm exactly the same and always have been. I wait until I desperately need something, clothes and shoes mainly, before I buy it. I've tried to break the habit but I fall back to my old ways very quickly.

My mates say the same about me,..I happily fly to a European city for weekend away.....but a weekend in a uk city is just as much if not more

mine have grown up and i still see things for them before myself - im bad at spending money on myself as there isnt a lot spare at the best of times - the house gets new stuff

You're not alone. I ordered some new glasses, £300. I paid £150 down, leaving the remainder to be paid on collection: they've been there two months, yet I've handed over £1,300 without blinking for a twin buggy for my grandsons who haven't arrived yet!

My girls are 24, 28 and 32 and still put their needs before mine.

Ah well, they promised to make sure I get the best nursing home money can buy!

Thank you!! Glad I'm not the only one, going by some of the parents at school I thought there was something wrong with me.

Just need to wait for all our fees to paid on our house purchase then I can book it....hopefully

I'm quite good at spending money on myself but I do put the kids before me, so if I only had a certain amount and they needed it, then they'd have it.

They are both grown up and when I'm shopping if I see clothes they'd like I'd buy it for them.

They always 'borrow' off me. I never see any of it back

Well my youngest who's 6 has said that he doesn't want us to go away for 3 nights, 1 night is okay but in his words "we need to stay together" so Amsterdam or any other longer breaks will be put on hold for a little longer.
