Never liked either particulartly, Sheehan had plenty of chops but was a bit wanky the few times I've seen him live, Michael was never a favourite of mine, his bass solo was always a good time to got for a pi55 or a pint IMO

His bass solo's were mostly noise - I totally agree with you on that but his playing outside of VH is bloody brilliant. Not ground-breaking but solid and consistent.

Jean Jacques Burnel is pretty handy... Nice n Sleazy has one of the dirtiest bass lines I can think of

Herbie Flowers was pretty good, though mostly as a session musician so only credited in the small print, and the git did inflict the song "granddad" on us. but the best I have ever seen was Amanda from Rock Bitch she was awesome on her bass solo's

good shout on Steve Harris and JJ Burnel, I saw Metallica with Cliff and they were a better band with him than newsted or Trujillo. Saw Wilco Johnson with Norman wattRoy last year and he was something special! In the no-longer-with-us category, Phil Lynott was a lyrical player, and I've seen New Order with Hooky and he was no slouch either.

For someone a bit more obscure, Derek Forbes from early Simple Minds (up to Sparkle in the rian, I think) was really the driving instrument in that band (listen to Glittering Prize!)

very true, he drives Maiden but also very musical and undersated on the atmospheric epics (Ancient mariner, to tame a land for instance)

With a name like yours you've got to give a shout to Steve Dawson from Saxon....

Big fan of Geddy Lee. Saw the tour of the hemispheres late 70s I think. I think Bruce Foxton is very underrated. Also like John Paul Jones and Jack Bruce

Definitely Paul McCartney. Jack Bruce. Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew. I had the joy of doing a couple of gigs with naz and petes bass rig was the most amazing sound ever! Listen to 'razamanaz' for a truly great rock bass
