I don't think this has been asked today... and some of you may have seen an article in the paper or on that "bookface" thingey...

this was written by north swindon police

“Apologies to anyone in the Haydonleigh area who may have been disturbed by our sirens yesterday morning – the PCSOs were at the primary school having a very important debate with the new reception year children about whether they go nee-nah or woo-woo,”

good on the 4 year olds!!!! bringing up such important issues....

so...... do police sirens go "nee-hah" or "woo-woo"

I am a "nee-nah" old school fella, the kids knowing no better being so innocent and voted for "woo-woo"!!!!

and... discuss!!!

Well, it's a difficult one.

If you're pretending to be the police then you go nee naw nee naw. If you are the police then you seem to have a range of sounds available these days, including that short harsh one and the wooo wooo.

We only went woo woo when we were pretending to be Starsky n Hutch or the guy from CHiPs.

All other times it was nee nar.

The newer sirens are wailers and yelpers, the old ones are two-tones. Most emergency vehicles now have digital sirens that can do all three, some also have "localisers" which are supposed to be more direction identifiable in cities. They make a kind of vibrating whooshing noise.

It's woo woo these days, isn't it?

They used to go nee-nah, in days of The Sweeney, but one drove by me today going woo-woo. I'm sure of it.

I suppose I could call 999 and report a gunman in my street, just to make sure...

I'm a neenah kinda guy. However, studying with a guy who used to work for the police, apparently the different sirens are for different areas so people can easily distinguish where the sound is coming from
