I think the e-cig law is a bit harsh but I support not smoking with under 18's in cars.

I'm a non-smoker. by the way.

I know that if I was still smoking 40-60 a day as when I stopped 20 years ago I would be completely fucked, probably on O2 and with limbs missing.

E-cigs do no harm, I've tried them a couple of times and its not bad.

If it helps people get off the then it should be encouraged.

When I smoked and they bought in the smoking ban it didn't affect me. I always preferred smoking outside so it was what I did anyway.

I never smoked in front of my daughter and would never even consider it in the car with her. That's a no no full stop.

I use vape now and I still have the same opinion. I do not vape in front of my daughter and I do not vape with her in the car.

The new law coming in will restrict me purchasing my liquid nicotine. That will affect me

I could stop yes, but I'm not ready to stop. I have reduced from 20 cigs per day for the last 28 or so years down to 3mg juice.

I will stop when I am ready to stop not when the government tells me to by making my purchase difficult and throwing it back in to the hands of the big tobacco companies to squeeze us for their lost profits.

Still got some time left to stockpile my nicotine and my concentrates. They won't ban the Vg it's used in cough mixtures all over the place

Just as a point of interest the UK is seeking to classify vaping a 'medical device' Until they do that they cannot control it by regulation.

Seems that further legislation is to come. Or maybe as way of applying new taxation?

More interestingly the EU voted such a classification down last year.

Every smoker who switches to vaping means government revenue drops.

They tried to offset the loss with further increases to tobacco tax....which caused more smokers to switch to vaping so it makes sense that they start paving the way to a move to taxing all nicotine products

I'm a smoker, 25 years ago when I had my son we knew the dangers of smoking and I took precautions but certainly not to the extent we know now.

I hardly smoked when my grandson was here last week, not only was I smoking outside I had a special top to put on to smoke in, came in had a face and hand wash and brushed my teeth, if he was here permantly I'd soon stop.

E cigs have to be far less harmful, however, we do not know the long term effects of them, and as far as I'm concerned you shouldn't inflict it on your child

they already do as smoking in your own home is now frowned upon by social services and is included in any documentation to court about your smoking habits and may aid in the courts taking children into care

to and from school daily, to and from clubs and sports, days out when they spend a couple of hours in the car....

I smoke. Quit while pregnant and breastfeeding feeding. Started again when I left the domestic violence that started after her birth. Iv never smoked in the house, or car, or anywhere near my daughter. She depends on me for everything, including choices for her health. Unfortunately not all parents bother to take the care that is their duty. She has TV time and a tablet, and we will have the odd take away or junk afternoon. I don't ban her from anything. I moderate it and teach her why too much is not good. Thanks to her, and teaching her to eat healthily and make choices for her own good instead of just dictating to her, iv shed 4 stone. Leading g by example. Teaching her. As a parent it's my job. If all parents took the privilege of becoming a parent seriously them the laws wouldn't be needed.

Again I think children need to be taught about alcohol and the dangers. Parents had drinks on the table for special occasions, from around 12 we were allowed a small shandy. Think leaving it till they go out with their peers and a bottle of cider is dumb.

You won't be able to buy liquid nicotine and pre made bottles of eliquid like we do now I think.

It will be governed and the only sale of nicotine products is trying to be funnelled through the big tobacco companies where we will be limited to the elites type of ecig or vaping device.

I think it is 2017 when they will try to fully enforce it but I could be corrected it was a while ago when I read the proposed bill.

Vaping shops as we see them now will have to be registered. If someone here works in a vape shop they could provide more detailed info better than how I've described it.

The UK government has very limited interest in protecting children or adults from harmful breathing in of scientifically proven harmful pollution that's causing strokes, heart failure, deaths. They have failed to reduce pollution to near to legal levels, consistently being well above them. So we have Carbon Monoxide and other very dangerous chemicals out there that we're breathing in.

I think the Nicotine is a tiny thing in comparison to the highly lethal stuff that's being permitted into our bodies every day. But a good smoke and mirrors act to deflect us from more important things.

I'm against children and adults being exposed and don't know much about the driving law, but think it's relevant to have the wider context of pollution that we already face.

The point I was trying to make was that these types of things pose a far greater risk to a higher number of children than the relatively few who are exposed to smoke in cars and if the government was so concerned about childrens health then why not ban them too? Or as the post above says, more pollution comes from the car, so why not ban cars from school runs and have roads around schools accessible by residents only? Someone else mentioned asthma, well while smoking has decreased over recent years the cases of asthma have risen. Why should that be? Unless its because of something in the air or the shit that people eat

Recent research suggests it's 95% safe. Better to let 16/18 year olds smoke e-cigs than tobacco products if they are going to smoke at all.

Would this be the same research that turned out to be funded by the e-cig companies?

I'm surprised they only managed 95%!

I think the concern about under 18s is that this age group often moves on to tobacco.

For now ye, thats what I mean, whats next? Its just for show really, its like putting a sticking plaster on a broken leg. And hey, at least while the kids are in the car they can open a window

All laws should be abolished. Don't protect the kids at all.

There's other bad stuff in the world so no point even trying to protect them a little bit.

Ban car seats and seat belts and well everything really.

We don't yet know the long term effects of using e-cigs. I think they are preferable to tobacco but protecting minors from potential harm seems sensible.

We fill them full of pop and incredibly fatty food. That is known to cause serious harm.

If we banned everything we didn't know about then there would be seriously very little we could actually do.

I don't like smoking in any way and think e cigs make the users look strange and desperate to suck on an addictive chemical even if it is out of a vial of chemicals made in a laboratory, but that notwithstanding we must be careful about banning stuff just because we don't know what it does or does not do.

Yes, it's true, that out of the 180 research studies they analysed, in one study, 3 of the team of scientists had links to E-cig companies/interest groups

I don't think any right minded person would think it acceptable to expose children to high levels of tobacco smoke. It's nothing to do with it being tobacco smoke though, it's any smoke produced from organic material. Wood smoke is one of the richest sources of benzo aplha pyrene, the chief carcinogen in all organic smoke - so you might want to think about that on bonfire night, or when having a barbecue, or if you have a coal fire. It doesn't matter if you're smoking lettuce or alfalfa, it's the combustion products that are the problem.

As a vaper, I would welcome legislation and quality control to ensure safe products.

I started on a propylene glycol based liquid, but now have a PG/VG (vegetable glycerine) mix.

Propylene glycol, as well as being used as an anti freeze, is also in mouthwash and used as a humectant in dried food as it is hygrscopic. It is considered to be a safe chemical for human consumption, though yes, there are no long term studies on extended chronic inhalation.

However, it is also used to create theatre dry ice used in clubs/gigs/plays. So there is a body of people working in these environments that are exposed to high levels of "passive" vapour on a daily basis, and thus far, no hot spots for any serious ailments have been identified. I would have thought that people who have worked or work in these environments would be a good study group.
