Now that they've been caught red-handed cheating on their exhaust emissions, I wonder how many will think twice before buying a VW.

They don't as it happens. As long as they're below 110db they're legal.

The VW thing is just the tip of the iceberg with German manufacturers. Audi were forced to fit new engines (for free) in America because of premature ring wear. It will be happening here soon too.

Various manufacturers have been doing it for years.

Porsche 911's used to have an air pump running off the crank which put extra air into the exhaust to fiddle the emmission readings for the US market.

They're only good if you drive 15k miles a year. Sadly the apparent emissions and economy equipment make them incredibly uneconomical, unreliable and dirty if you don't put the miles in.

The worst piece of advancment for the internal compression engine (diesels don't combust) are the EGR valve, swirl flaps and DPF. Remove them (sadly illegal now) and they're better than most petrol engines.

There also rather deadly for emissions without them... And there not much better with them!

Me I make my own diesel from cooking oil.... I'm currently running on some very nice vegetable oil from my local Chippy

I wouldn't like to even estimate the number of diesel cars on the road that have been re mapped, decated, DPF deleted or EGR valve blanked.

They all seem to get through an MOT just fine

Oh I don't use it neat, I refine it myself.

On my old old van I used to have a pre warmer on the fuel line and in the winter I'd mix it 80/20 with petrol or white spirits....

Or sshhh heating oil (as a boiler engineer I often come across alot that's thrown out)

I bought my car from a Small Honda dealership and they are awesome, honestly can't fault them. Had my car there last week, wasn't always starting, turns out it was just a battery terminal that had come loose. They sorted it in 5 mins with no charge.

Also made me smile when the technicians asked to here the speakers which set the alarms off on the cars in the forecourt

Ermm, Diesel engines do combust, they just do it through compression rather than a spark ignition. If there was no combustion they wouldn't work.

Otherwise, completely agree about EGR, DPF, etc.

Think he's more talking about that there is no direct combustion e.g a spark plug, the diesel goes bang because the air heats up when compressed.

Before everyone gets all whimsical about how great diesels would be without the dpf,egr etc etc

Remember you'd be paying about 600 road tax without them and the pollution from diesels are way worse than petrols!

In fact five will get you ten, within ten years you won't get into London with a diesel car, or any other European capitals

It's still an internal combustion engine, I've built, modified and mapped enough petrol and diesel engines to know. Not trying to have a dig at anyone just like facts to be correct

Insider tip - in 5-7 years most diesel cars will be phased out in preference to hybrids.

The manufacturers realise they can't meet anymore regulation with diesel without massive investment.

Better to use petrol hybrids and spend the money there.

Rudolf Diesel had a winning idea due to his design that could just about burn anything, esp cheap unrefined fuels. But it's now tarnished by emission controls fucking up the works.
