Ted Bundy was said to be considered handsome? (Will leave that up to the ladies to decide). Because he was good looking he managed to charm a lot of his victims into a false sense of security.

it was just a random thought I'd put out there as I just had a strange conversation and was told I don't look like a murderer or stalker.

I've seen pictures of people and thought oh they look like a serial killer but where do these generalisations come from

While it's difficult to tell every pic I have ever seen of any serial killer the eyes are the giveaway. Most have dead shark eyes

Let's face it on a daily basis how many people do you actually look into their eye's, actually look?

Unless you are looking at a picture for most it's a glance.

So noticing that look.

Could be difficult unless you sat staring at everyone, but then that in its self is a bit odd.

People always look a lot crazier after you know what they have done and capable of. Ted bundy killed so many victims cause he was charming and very normal looking

You might see someone that looks like a serial killer but in reality he/she could be perfectly normal and harmless, flip side you could rent a room to a sweet innocent girl and she could be a lunatic!

in have met someone whose killed two people, they where a personal friend, if you was interested I could tell you the story or give you links to the case but its a bit long for me to just type out, but he most certainly didn't look, act or anything else that would make you suspect and even after it happened none of us could think of anything that would trigger suspicion, he wasn't just a killer he led a double life

I saw a guy in a local MacDonald a few weeks ago now was shocked how much he looked like Ian Huntley I attully nearly went up to him n asked if anyone else had thought this n it left me wondering what it would be like if you looked like a famous killer. Would it be detrimental to your life.....

in the past I've done some of them online tests where you have to pick out the seriel killer, used to score above average but that could just be by look

Never done any of those although do believe the pictures that you see of people who are serial killers are picked out because they have that look of evil as their not going to use a happy smiley one now are they? Plus if you are told they are you become bias and see the signs of evil in their face. Never knowingly known someone who's killed someone else before unless they were in the armed forces but just like you bet if I did wouldn't have a clue.

Interesting post. Gunna reference Wednesday Addams "this is fancy dress... I'm a serial killer and look like everyone else" on another note how many tv series abd movies are based around serial killers? While they're actors and presumably not actually serial killers, it skews the opinion, but with that abundance, surely some opinions on what a serial killer may look like could potentially be subliminally incorporated into our Psyche's. Also, being hunters and hunted evolutionarily, there are some ingrained looks and actions that we subconsciously pick up on without realising

They look like everyone else but their brains are missing the bit that controls empathy.

I read a book that glossed over the above and one shrink (female) remarked she could understand how women fell for his charms and went back with him.

They are master manipulators. To my knowledge i've met one woman with the 'dead eye' look and she was subsequently a nutter.....

Shy, no empathy, prefered to be alone Ed Gein.

Serial killers will fit a profile but every profile is different. Would love for it to be as simple as they make out on Criminal Minds to work out how old, what kind of lifesyle/upbringing someone had to help narrow down who was looking for.

Killers and serial killers have no specific look, no you can't tell from looking or their eyes. The press choose the worst pictures they can find for dramatic effect.

I've met quite a few killers over the years some were lovely normal looking folk who did horrific things others were creepy from the off. Yes some are very bright others are as thick as a whale omelette there's no look or type.

but if somebodys knocking round with kids for fifty years and has his dead mothers clothes in his wardrobe you probably dont want to put him on baby sitting duty.

There was a guy who occasionally posted on the forum, he left and came back a while later but he kept the same profile picture. He posted strange comments, and he looked really weird. I always thought he wasn't quite right, he looked like a typical seriel killer.

And years ago, in Coronation Street, the guy who played Regards Holdsworth, he looked like a seriel killer.

In reality we wouldn't know. Peter Sutcliffe evaded capture for many years, even his wife claimed she didn't know. I expect he had lots of work colleagues who couldnt believe it.

Dr Shipman was a trusted doctor, I doubt anyone in his practice or his patients realised.

Fred West was a rather dim-witted man but was thought to be an ok guy amongst his rather poor neighbourhood.

Some seriel killers are just sadists, some are mentally ill, can you always tell someone is mentally ill just by looking at them. They don't share defining features.

The pictures that the media use are deliberately chosen and are possibly not the most flattering.

I bet most of our passport pictures make us look like we're a bit dodgy.

I had to go through psychological testing for a job I applied for once. I was told later I had the psychological make up of a serial killer. I still got the job!

Interesting question. I have seen on that well known social media site, pictures of what is reporting to be the killers of James bulger. Can you imagine being mistaken for either of those two!

I don't think there's a connection with their physical traits, though it may be easier to pick something up by viewing their behaviour, including connections and interaction with other people.

When in company they fit in and don't arouse suspicion.

Little about them stands out and sets them aside. It's only after they've been caught everyone puts 2 as 2 together.

I don't know if I can mention other sites in the forum but there is one called Serial Killer Central. It's very informative and even has gruesome pictures. Look up Albert Fish and the Butcher of Rottenburg.

Dennis Rader aappeared perfectly normal, was respected and trusted by his community, turned out he was BTK, one've America's most wanted serial killers.

Mary Bell, looked like butter wouldn't melt. Nobody has horns or a forked tail. Evil is banal, mundane and average looking. That's how it stays around so successfully.

I'm not sue you can fit such an extreme collection of murderers in to one handy category.

I will say this, however:

In my professional life I've worked with 4 people with diagnosed sociopathy. 2 I knew about the diagnosis in advance, 2 I did not.

With all 4 I had *exactly* the same feeling, which was something is not right here and I do *not* want to be left alone with this person.

If you ever feel that emotion, listen to it.
