I have decided America is calling me and going to go for my birthday next year in November. I was thinking Miami so does anyone know of anywhere that does cheap flights? Also where would you suggest in America to go.

Check the sky scanner website for flight deals

I've never been to the southern states, so I can't recommend any where I'm afraid

Let me know if you need a personal guide

But for the love of god, please be the first British person to NOT go to Florida. Please? Go anywhere else. California, New York, Las Vegas, you could even do an awesome tour of the National Parks out west. Just not Florida!!!!!

Depends on what sort of America you want to see? Decadence? Vegas.

Beautiful mountains? Colorado.

Open country? Wyoming. Of i go again is love to see the redwood forest.

Expedia, Momondo etc. search flight and hotel packages. Can't really beat SE Florida but personally prefer Ft Lauderdale from where you can easily visit Miami.

Go to New England in the fall, before November.

Avoid the typical package holiday places, they aren't much better than the Costa Del Blighty in Spain.

You could do it if you're happy to drive a lot. But make sure you are fully aware of distances before you set off on a five state trip. Distances in the US are completely different from distances in the UK.

Miami is nothing like you see on TV. Most of it is a total dive, there's lots of beggars hassling you for money too. If you do decide to go though, the Cuban quarter is a lively and friendly place to be. Lots of music and people dancing in the streets, great food too.

I personally love New Orleans.

"Make sure you get your visa "

That's the easy bit, it's all done online and costs somewhere around a tena.

Where to go is the hard part, as is is such a vast country with such a variation in environment, style, pace and temperment.

Most of the countryside is beautiful, albeit in different ways depending on the location. The variation between the cities makes it hard to recomend one versus another, as that willcoe doen to personal tase or preferances.

Having spent 4 years living in Corpus Christi and visited a number of different places whilst there, I would personally prefer to go to the north west (Washington and Oregon) and the Cascages, the temporate rain forests, laid back Portland and the small towns round about.

As it's over a year away use the flight price searching sites as guides atm. You've a couple of main options - a package of accom and flights or separate flights and accom.

Id spend time looking for deals as you have a lot of time left before you go.

New Orleans and San Diego are two of my favourite cities, areas and people.

You can get onto email alerts for special offers etc.

Anywhere other than Miami - it's a glamourous shit hole.

California's good but steer clear of LA (a barren, soulless, cultural wasteland).

New Orleans is not what it was.

NY is good if you've never been, a bit wearing if you have...

Do a road trip - best way to see the place.

My current fave USA city ~ Washington, it's a fabulous place for a city break as well as being beautiful in the Fall.

I luvre Florida, not necessarily Miami but the Keys are beautiful & Fort Lauderdale is a lot of fun and Orlando, well it's a luvre / hate kind of place but I've had some brillaint holidays there.

West Coast is wonderful too, hire a car and drive along the coast line. I've always wanted to do the vineyards along with Carmel & Monteray.

Re cheap fares, book in advance via Travel 4, Trailfinders, Sky Scanner.

I've been to Vegas more times than I care to admit.

the first time I was there I lost my luggage, friends and money within hours of arriving and was left, penniless by a cab driver who *promised* to help me and dumped me miles from anywhere...

I had to beg for money for the bus back to the casino where my friend had thought I'd fucked off.

TWO DAYS I was wandering round a casino with $20 in my pocket until the other half wired me some cash and I could get a room and some sleep.

Why the downer on Florida? We had an awesome time there, immediate family like and we all have kids so maybe that made the holiday so good. Each to their own though.

It's so tacky. You might as well round it off by going to Vegas

I like Las Vegas.

Its more that Florida is kind of a joke to a lot of Americans. Plus I think its funny that so many British people go to Florida on vacation when there are soooooo many better places in the US to go.

-Courtney

I've been to Vegas more times than I care to admit.

the first time I was there I lost my luggage, friends and money within hours of arriving and was left, penniless by a cab driver who *promised* to help me and dumped me miles from anywhere...

I had to beg for money for the bus back to the casino where my friend had thought I'd fucked off.

TWO DAYS I was wandering round a casino with $20 in my pocket until the other half wired me some cash and I could get a room and some sleep.

Sure, it's a fun place - but only if you have money.

I loathe it. "

Las Vegas, like LA is full of wonderful stories. Last time we went one of my mates brought some spending money. All weekend long he went up to roulette tables in different casinos putting some cash down on "lucky number nine"... and all weekend long he lost. We were driving out down the strip when he realised that there was one casino he hadn't tried. So he convinced us to park up out front and follow him in with his last few dollars. We walked straight through the casino, straight up to the roulette table, he placed everything he had on "lucky number nine" they span it... and he WON! The guy on the roulette table was a bit flummoxed... but we just turned and walked right back out, with the money of course. In one last spin he'd won everything he'd lost back.

The crazy thing about Las Vegas, and LA, is that people will think stories like this are made up... but that was pretty much exactly how it happened. I love shit like that

I once took a bus in Vegas... the driver got talking about the end of the world to some guy. I was a curious kid so jumped in and started chatting with him. He said he'd come and pick me up later and we'd hang with his mates. I met him, he took me back to his apartment, half of which was devoted to piles of semi-automatic rifles. Then we went off around the hills of vegas delivering parts to survivalist born again christians to convert their semi's into fully automatic. "Total fucking nutters" would be an understatement... and also bear in mind that I was a nihilist at the time so it was more than a bit sketchy for me... but again another wonderful adventure that came out of simply saying "Yes" to life

I only do Vegas if there are good flight connections and maybe just a night only - it doesn't match my spirit.

Find some places off the beaten track. I love Louisiana mostly because I have friends outside of New Orleans - but I spend some time down in the city too, as it holds many memories for me.

Visit some quiet Amish area, or places that aren't big tourist traps. There's so much diversity. If you're in California you can always pop over to the Hawaiian islands, for some low key relaxation and exploration - but not just a beach holiday.

Internal fares can be good in the U.S. - so can combine with hire cars.

I was at a house party in LA-la Land, a little d*unk, and was saying that, you know, if you looked at 60 years of American foreign policy in particular US support for the state of Israel you might possibly understand why the WTC attacks happened.

Wrong audience. Went down like a fart in a space suit.

The host of the party went off, came back with a package and said here, I want you to have this.

I unwrapped layers of brown paper and bubble wrap, right down to an A4 clip from with, grit, grey dust, I dunno...

What's this? ask I

I was in NY on the night of the attacks. I went down and slipped under the police lines and I collected this out of the sky and I want YOU to have it.

Shut me up, I can tell you.

West Coast is wonderful too, hire a car and drive along the coast line. I've always wanted to do the vineyards along with Carmel & Monteray.

DC is odd - it's preserved in aspic, like an open air museum.

Last time I was there I was staying with the family of a good friend in their neo-colonial masion NEXT DOOR TO THE CATHEDRAL...

And then a bus ride away, beyond the beltway, is a whole 'nother part of town full of poor people that never gets a mention.

It's weird.

I've been all over the states and the west coast and the south west are the best. Stay away from L.A. if you the people make your holiday. San Diego is beautiful and the people are so friendly and welcoming. I also love Virginia. The people treat you like family. Colorado is also beautiful. I never recommend New York. It's rude and expensive. The humidity in Florida can be an issue and i find Miami to very elitist but i've had some fun there

Why not start at New York then road trip down to Miami. Lots to see and do on that journey with stop offs.

Spent a lot of time in Miami.

Only been to NYC, Boston, Washington DC and Fort Lauderdale

Lauderdale was great - especially the time my trip co-incided with spring break

I found Boston a bit snooty & pretentious

Washington is a city of landmarks. For me, the Korean War Memorial was the highlight, closely followed by Arlington.

NYC wins hands down for me. Been 4 times and it never gets old. Love the vibe and no other city has ever heightened my senses as much.
