Was chatting to the new manager of our local Costa and he said that since he took over there have been complaints about him because he looks 'scruffy' now the guy always looks clean, smells nice, is really welcoming and friendly, excellent with the kids and has a clean ironed uniform on. Turned out that its because he has tattoos on his hands and long hair (which isn't messy either)

Whilst he was telling me this he said he was waiting for emails complaining about the new guy who is gay. I said surely you won't get emails about that he seems lovely. He said he wouldn't be surprised seeing as when the young black lad started 2 weeks ago he had a few complaints and people asking if it would be ok for then to request someone else serve them as they didn't want the black one touching their drinks!

Maybe im daft but I know some people still think that way but to actually ask that in a shop.. I was shocked!!

It really angers me that people are still so small minded, ignorant and just plain nasty.

I've a similar issue at work one of our tech guys has Dyspraxia. He stutters a bit on the phone at times. He is very knowledgeable and polite and always helping people out. However I've had one client refuse to deal with him because she said 'She couldn't be bothered to wait while he stutters half his words out'

She was allowed to say this to our other engineers but I wasn't allowed to talk to her about her attitude.

Sometimes I hate people

"Maybe you should move from your backward town "

I know a lot of people still think of tattoos as dirty etc. wherever you go.

Tbh ive lived here all my life and ive got 2 close friends that are black and ive never encountered any racism when ive been with them and they've never told me of any situations either.

Ive never thought of my town as backward.

There's a guy with a really bad stutter that comes into my work. I just wait and let him get it out in his own time. I was told once thst finishing words etc for them can make it worse. Everyone else just has to wait till he's done!

Omg, I'm shocked that people are so ignorant and offensive!

Ukip want to keep some people out of the UK. I think we need a party that deports many people - the bigots - who are currently here, though I'd hate them to be imposed on anyone else.

It's intriguing how much it's _iewed as 'personal choice' versus 'customer is always right'. I guess they're not doing anything blatantly illegal, they will perhaps hide behind corporate employment laws. Interesting dilemma though, shocking it isn't, but unfair for sure - small minded idiots...

It would be illegal - thank goodness - for him to deploy or recruit his staff differently.

Consider writing to the store and congratulating them on the manager's and staffs' presentation and service skills. At least there'll be at least one opposing piece of evidence in contrast to the prejudiced swivel eyed lots' hate mongering.

It's funny you should say that, I work serving the public and it's very rare we get a complaint but you can guarantee that if we do head office is on the phone within minutes of them recieving the complaint! We get loads of comments every day from people we have been serving for years so one decided to send a lovely email about how helpful and friendly we are and so on. Did we ever hear about that?? Nope!!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

It nearly 20 years since I had a job teaching City corporates that people with tattoos, different haircuts and skin colour could still have skills and do a decent job. Their complaint back then was that their customers wouldn't like it. My answer was that people with tattoos, different hair and skin colour might become their customers if they see people like themselves in different roles.

It's really saddened me to read the OP but it hasn't exactly surprised me. I have had situations where people have avoided my handshake but then shook the hand of my white colleagues. Colour must be as catching as the Ghey.

I was being a bit facetious tbh, not trying to start a North vs South argument. Every area can have small minded idiots but I've never seen or heard anything like that where I've lived. I've always lived in cities though so maybe it's more of a small town/village mentality.
