I find it quite interesting on the forums. I have seen people ask for advice, or confide in people, they have never really met. This is to help them through or get the answer to their problems. My point being do you class the forum follwers as your extended friends?

That's the nature of the internet - I have quite a few good friends I've known for up to 10 years but never met and some of them know pretty much everything about me, even more so than my real life friends.

I have friends that I have known from cycling forums for a similar time who I've never met. Similarly friends from music forum that I only see very occasionally. The dynamic here is different so I don't really feel people are friends unless I've met them but there are people who I've never met off here that I like and respect

As an aside, I do think the internet friends thing is a generational thing. I would have been around 30 when I started posting on music and cycling sites so had nothing to fear (so to speak), I remember discussing this with crystal once and she found it odd because being younger she was a teenager when she started using the net and was constantly told that online strangers were a bad thing

A friend is someone you haven't met yet .If you chat daily with someone about all types of things surely that's the beginning of a 'relationship' . I guess then it would depend on what you would say a friend is and what they mean to you .

We have made some real friends on here .

There are people we've met that use the forums and that we class as friends. We've seen them socially and are in contact outside of Fab. There are people I've engaged with via the forums for years that I respect a lot and would have gladly met in person but for geography!

Do I class those I haven't met as friends? No.

More a kind of 'virtual acquaintance'. But that may well change at some point.

I think that there are people on the forums that I would happily be friends with. But I don't think I've been on the forums long enough to call anyone here my friend.

I have met people on fab but not on the forums who I would call my friends, albeit not yet good friends, as we haven't known eachother long.

had others i have had a really good laugh with on forums .

especially on the avatar pic or the fab a pic posts .

its all a laugh. some i just think want to over rule it though and love to spoil the humour of a post ...

If people's only form of communication is the forum and their only "friends" are people in the forum then that's really quite worrying and they definately need to go out in the real world, find a hobby and meet some actual real people.

Many years ago before I had the internet and I heard about online friendships/ relationships I used to poo poo the idea and even thought of those people as being a little bit desperate.

How could these people have some kind of attachment to words on a screen.

The first person I ever chatted to via a private chat was from a quiz room, after a couple of days I realised I quite liked this person ( in general terms) and looked forward to our chats.

Roll the clock forward and I started to get more people I liked, one a lady in America who I still talk to now, people from all over the country.

The "network" of friendship began. Some I've met and become RL friends, a small amount I've never met but it feels like I have.

I like people from forum threads but wouldn't class them as friends I'd have to go down other avenues.

I had become one of the "desperate" people I'd perceived.

There is nothing wrong with my everyday life but I live alone so I spend a lot of time on the internet interacting.

There are also a lot of lonely people or disabled housebound people and I think the internet is a blessing..

Why do I tell the forums things about myself, well for me its to do with the length of time I've been on here, the longer I was on the more I said, I said very little in the first few years about private stuff, and I know some people (certainly not all) are interested in things that go on, I know I am. I also don't think I come across as a sympathy seeker whingebag (some may think differently) but when I've genuinely been having a crisis I've received so much support will never forget how people on the forums where when my dad died and of cause the forum posts lead to PMS.

Some people are genuinely interested and that's why I will continue to post in amongst all my other random drivel.
