ive recently dipped my toe into this little rabbit hole. I'm not great with computers but managed to set my laptop up to enable me to browse the deep net safely. There is some very odd stuff there but also some other useful and interesting stuff. However I'm still a bit green so would like to be educated by any folk who use it. Advice on bitcoins is most needed. Cheers folks

Yea they are all available however I very much doubt most are legit, it's not that I need to hide my spending it's just the way it's done on there. I'd happily use my PayPal or visa if it let me, honest officer

Anything you want is available on the Dark Net, if you know where to look.

I remember once stumbling over a website with an innocuous name that suddenly escapes me... now I like to think I know about drugs and the market but here were compounds, chemicals, drugs by the kilo that I've never even heard of.

It's like the Wild West out there.

I cant educate you but I think your first priority is to ensure that you are totally safe. And to keep a disconnect between any standard internet identity that you have and any connection that you even know about the other side.

The irony is that the Dark Net was developed, via TOR, by the US g'ment to facilitate groups in politically repressive countries to co-ordinate.

The Dark web is not what you think it is, it is the unspeakable world of Tor and Darknet, stay away from it or pay the price. Bitcoins are virtual currency with no controls or ownership, Mining is done with powerful computers and is open to abuse. Do you like gambling with large amounts of money and potentially losing them. I think what you mean to say is, that as with nuclear technology, the Dark Net is neither 'good' or 'evil' - it is entirely dependent on how people use it.

Not completely true, secure vpn has been around forever and has many legitimate uses to keep hackers out in banks and financial societies, proxy servers are a bypass to countrywide firewalls ad are not untraceable at all.

You might want to be a bit careful, even if you think you are doing it safely. Silk Road and a few other sites, got taken down recently by the FBI (I think) and people were put in jail. Though it was later reinstalled by others.

I know it was higher-ups that were found out, but you never know what information they grab up on average people in the process...

Listen to this.

I'm a pretty skilled IT used, but even I stay away from the Dark Web. Quite frankly, there are some awful things on it. Chances are that unless you've done a fair bit of research before 'dipping in' - you've not secured yourself properly. Hell, even if you have, I'm pretty sure it'll be easy enough to track you if somebody want to.

Whilst it may be true that unless you're buying/sharing goods (a fair amount illegal, let's face it), direct action wouldn't be taken - it's fairly certain some activity will be tracked.

Just stick to the typical ol' web. It's not like it's lacking in resources or anything.

The basic principle is that your request is broken into lots of bits and shunted through lots of routes, and the reply is similarly routed.

The principle was built by the American Navy to hide the location and content of communication, but it doesn't work unless there is a lot of traffic to hide it behind, so it was made public.

Now in theory this secure except at 2 points, where it is sent from and where it is received. sort of...

If you are using the dark net via your home broadband connection there is a third point i.e. your ISP as at that stage there is only 1 connection made. No problem for the American Military as they own the connections, but unless you are driving around using public access points your connection is not as secure as you may think.

It is of course buried under a mound of other data and unless someone starts to look for it it probably won't be found by accident, but it is NOT untraceable for normal members of the public.

What I was laughing at?

While I'm sure there is some legit dodgy goings on in the dark web, but some of the sites which are openly advertised on hidden wiki surely must be a parody.

A hitman to take out "a normal person" for £20,000 and all you have to do to start is to send an email.....plus the way some sites are written is rather comical.

And as for drugs delivered straight to your door, or at a dead drop. Doesn't really keep things anonymous......

I didn't do much digging, just stuff from hidden wiki, but there's certainly some seriously hardcore stuff out there that I wouldn't even think of going near.

The moment you indicate that you are not a regular Joe, just using the net for standard stuff like facebook or Fab, then you mark yourself out as worthy of special attention. We already know that all the humdrum stuff we do is seemingly of value for us to be under scrutiny. Imagine now that someone deliberately takes a path that is known to be of particular significance.

If someone is not wishing to be placed under higher levels of observation then I perceive it to be unwise to signify that they're of this persuasion. Using tor already marks a user as distinct from others. Using tor to access less mainstream places is foolhardiness Imo.

As I said earlier, I am not particularly expert at anything concerning technology and have not used the dark net or bitcoins. Nor am I particularly risk averse. I am somewhat alarmed by what people may expose themselves to.

You can beat your cotton socks law enforcement will use Tor and the dark net to entrap people as lets face it anything is only truly secure as the people using it. Seeing Tor is funded by the US government pretty sure regardless of what NSA say they will have their own backdoors.
