Corbyn didn't sing the National Anthem at a Battle of Britain memorial.

Is this really just a storm in a Tea Cup or is it a sign of something more.

Personally I think if, as a republican and an atheists he doesn't want to sing 'God Save The Queen' why should he.

Well yes, I agree...but the so called 'patriots' who buy it today are directly disrespecting the memory of Britain's war dead.

How anyone at a national newspaper could think that it's acceptable to turn a war memorial into an opportunity to launch a political attack is unbelievable. But then some people simply have no respect at all for the lives that people gave in defence of this country.

I think it's more to do with his policies on NATO and Trident that make him a possible threat to National Security if you believe that they are wrong. Also some of his statements regarding groups considered by many as terrorist or para military.

I really don't think that any one expects to see Jeremy marching up Downing St. with an AK 47 clasped in his hot, red hands.

It's not character assassination to point out areas of policy where many may believe he's gone or might go, the wrong way.

However him being an atheists and a republican, whilst I am neither, is not a cause for national panic.

I don't really know, have lost interest in politics 100% and focusing more on changing the things i can change myself, not relying on them lot for anything.

David Cameron said it, i think he's panicking a little maybe now he's got an actual opponent and we're not all in this together any more.

While i admire him sticking to his principles, the majority of the voters (those who actually bother) are still traditionalists and would expect him to sing OUR national anthem... Its outdated for sure, same as everyone elses round the world, but its still OUR anthem and therefore should be sang with pride.

What pisses me off the most is that the memorial is now marred by this thing. That was probably the last time a lot of the vets get to remember their fallen friends. But instead of remembering lets talk about him not singing the anthem.

To be fair I don't care he didn't sing it so long as he knows that the people who were being remembered were the ones who made his and all of ours positions possible.

But he could've at least done his top button up!!!!! That's fucking worse!!!

Watch the rugby on fri night...watch and listen to 80,000 people sing OUR anthem....look at the crowd of all ages singing....then tell me that its not important or relevent to the people of this country...normal middle class people, the ones who bother to vote... Not the raving left or far right or career politicians...normal genuine working class people. Its their votes that win elections. Look what happened last time... Those people won it.

Yes I'm a republican, atheist, but not a socialist, and I'm also an ex HM Forces commissioned officer.

Whilst he did turn up and maintained a solemn and respectful countenance - he looked like a scruff, not even bothering to wear a suit and have his shirt done up.

IMHO unless he changes his policies and his attitudes, Labour will never win a general election whilst he is leader

but then if you look at the footballers... not all of them will sing it....

or grand prix drivers... or athletes....

do they not appeal to middle england as well...

if corbyn is an athiest and a republican... he doesn't believe in god, and doesn't think there should be a queen..... then why should he sing god save the queen....

He stuck to his principles, very publicly, and isn't that welcome in a politician? Ultimately I suspect that his success in the next election (or not) will hang on how the economy fares between now and 2020. Things go well and the Tories get back in - no matter who had won the Labour leadership election; things go badly - unemployment up, cuts harder and deeper etc - and the Tories are voted out. Corbyn's policies will be of little importance in determining whether Labour win or not. Certainly his not singing God Save the Queen will be of no consequence

i think what the media are actually in danger of doing is turning it into a "him vs us" arguement... which may lead to people actually rallying around him...

I see this guy wants to form the next government in 2020. Her majesty's government. if he doesn't want to sign the national anthem, then why would he want to form the next government? Having had meetings with Sinn Fein, being sympathetic to there cause, I can honestly say he was there yesterday because he had to be not because he wanted. Showing respect to the fallen and paying tribute to those who fought in the Battle of Britain I think not. Upon joining the Armed forces you swear allegiance to Her Majesty, Clearly he has no time for the armed forces that keep this country safe. Let him stick to supporting Sinn Fein.

I'm a Republican an atheist, I'm anti NATO, nukes and war and I'm rather a happy bunny today!

I'm also a member of the British legion and have a DD to them... The two are not even remotely connected in my mind.

As a fellow Republicanist, I know I can feel pride in paying respects to those who fought and died in the War without feeling the urge to sing a song idolising one person! The two have no connection!

About time we had a less divisive, more appropriate anthem - e.g. Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem. Something not connected with glorying a monarch but the country as a whole

But Corbyn's words and actions are about perception - in fact politics is largely about perception (or smoke and mirrors). Even if I don't believe in his values, I have to respect them because not to do so would be arrogant.

We should embrace his differences (shit, enough of us on here are "special" and seeking some kind of validation) but whether his differences endear him to a public that are brow beaten by any government to conform, only time will tell. I expect he'll be gone within 6 to 12 months.

I dont and never have loved the Royal family, and this comes from my father who served in WW2 in the RAF funny enough and my Grandad who did both wars as a professional soldier and I am military an yet we all would sing our National anthem as a mark of respect for our Country and its people, nothing to do for me with the Royals. I find Corbyn to be a traitor and a dangerous man. He showed me his lack of respect also.

we went to war in 1939 to put a stop to such things, you sir are talking drivel..

i am grateful and in debt of those who laid down their lives to allow anyone the right to stand and not sing the anthem if that is their choice..

btw, ex services done a cpl of tours, attend remembrance to pay my respects to lost mate's etc..

i do not stand and sing the national anthem when its on telly and i suspect that vast majority of those speaking similar faux outrage do not either..

I think this is way off the mark.

The people for whom the national anthem is still important to die off in their thousands each year, while the people who the Tories are disenfranchising and Corbyn is very popular with become eligible to vote in their thousands each year.

What? The national anthem is very important to my son and his friends. And they are 12!

Seriously! As a mum to a 12 and 13 year old I have never known any kids to find the national anthem important.

Have they never been involved with the cubs or scouts etc, or had any interest in sport and our national teams?

There's a difference between having to sing it as part of some activity and it being important to them. Big difference.

They don't have to sing it at football they choose to because they are proud of their country and team. Something wrong with that?

Nothing wrong with it. That's their choice just as its others choice not to sing it. But it isn't important to most kids.

How do you know? Have you asked them?

You don't need to ask every child to know this. You can look at modern child behaviour to ascertain certain things. Many things are important to today's children, this isn't one of them. So you're trying to tell me that today's kids think the national anthem is vitally important? The majority wouldn't even know the words to it.

That's a disgrace, more brainwashing is the answer, they will obey.

I'm happy to have raised intelligent kids who think for themselves and who even debate with me on current affairs. They're not sheep who can be brainwashed. Well adjusted too."

I'd rather see respect for this country's people by the actions it's government takes, not by the singing of a song.

As for the 'establishment' press you have to ask yourself which is worse, a man choosing not to sing a song about the queen or a media empire that systematically hacked the phones of the royal family?

Then again Cameron and Obama showed great respect taking 'selfies' at Mandela's funeral.

Every time Jeremy Corbyn is mentioned in a news report on the BBC he is referred to as 'the left wing Labour Party leader'. In the interest of fairness and un-biased reporting, surely David Cameron should also be referred to as 'the right-wing Prime Minister '

"Big fucking deal!!!Does anyone here know that the tories cut tax credits for working people? No! Because the newspaper front pages are dominated by headlines about Corbyn not singing the national anthem. Yesterday the Tories cut tax credits for hundreds of thousands of working people making them and their families significantly worse off. You would have thought the newspapers might have been outraged but no instead they focus on a song. It really is pathetic.

They are going to try and break him like a school bully breaks his victim. The next time it comes to the national anthem all the media's cameras are going to be focused on his mouth.

War is raging across many parts of the world, refugees are dying and trying to reach Europe, the NHS is under threat, poor people in Britain are getting poorer whilst the rich are getting richer - and the British media are concerned about whether Jeremy Corbyn will sing the national anthem in the future!"

The Tory media, who just happen to hate JC, because he is a threat to their greedy, self centered way of like.

Have you not thought that he might just possibly have more important things to think about than if his jacket matches his tie? Boris Johnson is hardly the most dapper of male politicians. But he's minted, so I suppose that's excusable as hes a "bit of a character" .
