"who'll be the first to comment on old boilers on here? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My old boiler was hot and wet enough until we fitted the massive bathtub, and my gas bills have not gone down on me in ages ![]()

"Get at least 3 quotes and the boiler you want, then see if a grant can reduce the bill. I paid £3500 for direct replacement rip out tank and top rated boiler for 4 bed house without any grant. Having said that I would have done it differently with hind sight and a good plumber who designs the system rather than looks at the easiest way to get paid is a bonus! " Will get on that tomorrow, cheers bud

" ^^^ This, I always get 3-5 quotes for any work I carry out at home lets me get different opinions...and if they are all saying the same thing for the same price then you're much more confident you are doing the right thing.

"Has anyone any experience if these? Having been through the assessment today the engineer came round to look at installation. Boiler is going into same location, he wanted £836 up front. To have the flue through the kitchen roof took the bill to £1400+ ![]() ![]() . Is the grant coming through your energy supplier?. There's a great deal of... Conning goes on with boiler grants! Ferrolis aren't a bad boiler(middle of the road price wise), nearly every domestic boiler is A rated these days, so don't read to much into that! A flue going through your roof will cost a fair bit extra but check you have to (there's certain regs that don't allow the flue to close to doors/windows/front of buildings etc etc. Either way get three quotes and compare

"Did our boiler nearly a year ago. Bought the boiler and flue myself, paid about £800 and then £250 fitted and tested with a magnaclean thrown in ![]() ![]() if the installer wasn't registered with Baxi its only a 2 year warranty, it's worth checking

"The free boiler scheme ECO (Energy Company Obligation) was set up to help fuel poor families but you have to meet certain criteria to qualify, you also need a EPC doing on your property. From the EPC a calculation can be obtained to the carbon saving having a new boiler would produce. When the scheme was first introduced installers where getting around 17p per unit of carbon saved where as now its around 6p so their is a short fall which you would have to meet. At one stage this would be covered by the Green Deal which you paid back through the saving on your meter but that's gone now. New boilers have fanned flues on them so don't have to go on an outside wall but new legislation has been brought out where if a flue is boxed in it has to have an inspection hatch fitted every 1.5 meters so i would suggest if it cant go on an outside wall take it through the roof with an additional cost of around £400 depending on how many flue extensions you need. If your going for a cheap boiler remember these are usually more costly to repair as the manufacturers sell them at a loss because they know they're going to make money on the parts. I usually fit, Main, Ideal, Baxi or Vaillant. What you want though is to try and get the best warranty you can as all boilers have a life span of around 10 years now as their as so many moving parts. If your getting quoted don't be suckered in by people saying your getting a free thermostat, flush or filter. The manufacturers instructions says a filter must be fitted for the warranty, the building regs says the system must be flushed and the high efficiency regs state that an interlock must be provided to the boiler and this is the thermostat so all them free things have to be done anyway to meet the regulations. If you have a combi boiler already fitted you want to be paying between £1000 and £1400 for a boiler without any grants, if not its going to be between £1600 and £2000 any more and I'd seriously get some more quotes Sorry its long winded but their seem to be conflicting advise on here. I am a Gas Safe and Green Deal installer and have been for the past 30 years" Totally agree, I work on site/house renovations, and this is the best reply. ![]()
