It is being reported that Germany will be closing its border with Austria tonight, if this turns out to be true, is the Schengen Agreement all but dead?

Oops. Slight amendment.

Germany is reintroducing border checks.

Brighton - even Hove!

I think they are allowed to on a temporary basis within the rules of the agreement but it's still quite a major decision.

No, but deja vu came to mind when I read this post. Tho it won't come to that between Austria and Germany

Costa Blanca Spain...

At the moment it is only the rail border that has been temporarily closed. Bottom line is that the city of Munich is full. Around 60,000 migrants have hit the city in less than a fortnight. When listening to German politicians on the TV here you can almost smell the fear.

It's a huge and difficult challenge even for a country as big as Germany. I hope it is managed well.

I realize this was a joke but perhaps people will start to realize that the problems won't just be solved by saying "You're all welcome".

I would have thought that everything had been well planned out and all facilities in place when she said that Germany would take 500,000 per year. Was that not the case?

aspart of the agreement border control can be set up.....

In the practicality I think if you are an EU passport holder traveling from Germany to Austria you should be ok....if you were a migrant from a country like Syria you at have a few more challenges

Costa Blanca Spain...

Update from Germany.

At the moment all rail services between Austria and Germany are suspended and checkpoints have been set up on the motorway border crossings.

Commentators here seem to think that this is just a ploy to put pressure on the eastern EU country's to accept migrant quota's at today's meeting in Brussels. However at least one country (Slovakia) has said they will veto any attempt to do so.

We will see what happens.

"It is being reported that Germany will be closing its border with Austria tonight, if this turns out to be true, is the Schengen Agreement all but dead?"

Article2.2 of Schengan allows member states to introduce border checks in accordance with public policy or national security matters. However it is not a cessation of the actual agreement.

To the letter of the agreement that is true and Schengen will not be torn up overnight. However this along with the recent temporary closure of the border between Denmark and Germany is very much the thin end of a very fat wedge.

Retirement Village

Although i respect what the germans are doing in taking in the troubled and less fortunate i dont think they thought this through when they said it.

It's one thing saying you will accept refugees and putting a figure on how many but its a different ball game when theres a surge and you aren't properly ready to do so.

Ok slightly off topic from what was asked but i do hope this works out for those who are genuinely suffering and the german right wing dont stoke up hate
