I'm interested to know how many people trawl through the topics on the forums , read through the comments, and maybe disagree with what is being said, but refrain from making their point of _iew known as it seems that their would be a backlash

I only come on here now to read the forums but there are times when I want to make my opinion known but don't .

No, I just say things, some will agree some won't and some you will get backlash, just get stuck in

Make your opinion if you want to, i personally don't think the backlash is ever that bad.

Sometimes i feel a topic isn't worth commenting in or someone else has already said what i want to say, but i'd never keep quiet for fear of offending anyone or being scared of what they've got to say. Sometimes you learn something new too.

I'll always comment if I want to. In real life I enjoy discussing back and forth and I enjoy it here too.

I comment on threads where I think I have a valid point, if there's a backlash then so be it.

However, there have been some recent threads where tbh I haven't felt intellectually capable & any coment made would have been nit picked to death.

This for me too. I know very little about politics/current affairs so I generally don't bother, especially when they descend into personal attacks. I like the people threads that open up topics that interest me.

I'm too much like a bloody bull in a china shop for that But some of the threads on here really feel like the equivalent of public stonings so I do worry that it puts some people off. Over time I've had a few people PM me to say they've agreed with some of my points but would never say so publicly. Some poor woman started a ghost thread earlier today and people weighed into her like she was a punch bag.

Sometimes people bring it on themselves... and sometimes they seem to be thick skinned enough and enjoy it... sometimes what has been posted is genuiney disgusting... and so there are times when such aggressive swarming responses have some merit.

But I worry sometimes that some people on here have got a little too familiar with the frank brutality they can exhibit with other long time forumites... and use that same manner with newbies or people just looking to strike up an interesting conversation.

Just my point of _iew Continue as you were

My big fear is the "fuck me, beer with me, run away from me" threads... I've said too much rubbish on these forums to want to know how many people dislike me lol I just assume my presence on the thread would provoke a stampede in the wrong direction lol Plus I'm crap at small talk

I'd totally disagree with that. I don't think you can say whatever you like, firstly because there's a set of rules you have to follow and secondly I wouldn't speak to someone badly here just like I wouldn't in the real world. Whilst some may be warriors hiding behind their keyboards, the majority of people here are decent, normal people and those I've met from online forums, either swinging or vanilla, are now friends in real life.

My conversations in both are equally real, the difference is that in real life you have tone and expression which generally helps garner the intention of the words.

I think it's quite sad that people are rude and unnecessarily harsh in some topics. There are a lot of socially inept people both online and in real life. It doesn't make it acceptable to say what you like just because you're not face to face.

I figure be polite, have manners and treat people as you would wish to be treated. Banter is all well and good but I'd agree with mpassion, sometimes those of us who have been around a long time and are familiar with the forum workings between the regulars probably should cut the newbies some more slack.

It saddens me that some people feel the can't comment for fear of being jumped on in the forums. Everyone's right to do so is a given, it is not a right to ridicule posters because you disagree with their opinion.

It depends how strongly I feel about the subject being discussed.

If I have very strong opinion on it, it is usually better that I stay away from posting.

If I can help, advise or lark about with a thread I will usually make one or two comments.

If it's a thread that interests you the go ahead,if it's a comment you don't agree with the go ahead. You will always get the ones who shout down your post with numbers and statistics but if you post genuinely with a _iew to having your mind exposed to an alternative then go ahead. I think it's the ones who post with an ulterior motive and a plant to put you down are the ones who should think twice about posting ??

Depends on my mood. Some threads I ignore (look at me and fab pic ones mostly), some I do this and move on, some I'll make some glib comment that doesn't add anything to the conversation, some I get my soap box out.

I'm like this is real life though able to articulate myself better in real life discussions

I often refrain from commenting, on topics I feel strongly about but most of the time its not because I'm worried about the backlash, more because I sometimes struggle to be articulate and concise, and phrase things so that the context is understood.

I couldn't care less about 'backlash' as everyone is entitled to an opinion, and thats what the forums are for.

I'm more likely to post if I disagree with them. But there are threads I've posted on (particularly the political ones) which have started out quite interesting, and then a few usual suspects appear who you just know are going to run it into the ground, and those I can't really be arsed with.

I have posted some things that have caused backlash, if there is valid reason for me to back down, I do so, but if I feel that the other person is wrong, I try not to attack, but make a flippant remark to accentuate the flaws in their logic. How it is received I cannot control, but I worry about irking people

I am by my nature a very diplomatic person who would take advice or opinion at face value in the spirit it is meant. I'm not the kind of person who would go out of my way to upset somebody or make them feel belittled. ( if that makes sense )

In reality, I pride myself on the efforts I go to to try to be the nicest person anyone can possibly meet, whether in my personal or professional lives?

( if that makes any sense? )

Yes, I do refrain from commenting on some threads, sometimes because I know I cannot either articulate myself sufficiently or have enough knowledge to add anything worthwhile and sometimes because I know my opinion may be considered contraversial by some on here and I don't always want to be drawn into justifying my opinion further than my initial comment.

I enjoy a good debate about things which interest me, but some times my opinions are mood dependant and therefore, the wording might be a little brutal. It's just banter and patter and I don't take much of this seriously.
