It should be allowed, horrible seeing a person suffer in pain everyday just waiting and wanting to die...

I think if the person is still mentally able to make decisions then it should be ok. It's unfair for someone to suffer in there last few months or few years of life

I think it is terrible to watch people suffer and I am a believer but there must be safeguard upon safeguard.

I shudder to think of the pressure some people may put on elderly or the infirm. Families can be amazingly loving and horrendously cruel.

It's a hugely complex issue and there are so many angles and so many opportunities for abuse, but if someone is in pain and no chance of survival, or quality of life is simply unbearable, it seems to me to be crueler to keep them alive and suffering. We wouldn't do it to a pet, for example.

But, of course, there needs to be safeguards then there's always the 'oh I'm such a burden on my family etc that I'd be better off dead' situation to circumnavigate too!

Such a complex debate!

Not a huge suprise given we have a very conservative (please note the lower case) parliament.

Even had it got past the House of Commons I would have flabergasted if it would get past the House of Lords.

Personay I feel that as a nation there is still too much importance with maximising the length of life rather than quality of life.

Personally think they have made the wrong decision. I have a do not resuscitate clause and refusal of intervention clause in my LPA if I get to the point of simply prolonging life for the sake of it but it still means I have to suffer up until that point.

I would have voted it in... As someone else said, there is too much emphasis on the length of life rather than the quality of life...

Me personally, wouldn't want to linger and suffer for years and months....

Also quite surprised they didn't pass it, just as a money saving move.... Think of the money they'd save not treating people who are terminally ill.... They clearly would rather people suffer in any way possible
