I'm 37 weeks pregnant...had to go get my whooping cough jab (5th baby, never heard of it being necessary before)....so I cycled up to the Drs which is only about a mile but nearly killed me, only to be told they couldn't do it cos I have a cold.....

Really?? What's the worst that could happen?? Feel a bit shit for a few more days but risk the baby not benefitting from me having the jab? ugghh had to wait two weeks for the appointment, and I'm getting induced on Wednesday so not going to get the jab

The baby can have the injection straight away anyway. The one you were going to get would only protect them for a couple of months.

Just have to say! Hats off to you for getting on a bike at 37weeks,

I've had 4 kids and have never heard of needing a whooping cough jab when pregnant,is that because you were not vacinated as a child?

It's thought it can possibly increase the volume of fluid in the stomach.

Odd that they've left it so late?

I had mine at about 28 weeks...

Your immune system is fighting off the cold. It's just a precaution not to give you jabs in case your body can't cope with the side effects of the jab on top of your cold.

It's not a wasted appointment. If you had the jab and it made you Ill you would be complainimg to the gp.

Any drugs/injections etc that have any effect on your immune system are not given when a patient shows signs of colds, sore throats and cold sores/ulcers this is to ensure that you can cope with the chemicals/virus being put in your body.

As for chewing gum- rightly so too, aspiration during surgery is a huge risk and it chewung gum increases stomach acid

Yeah when they say no solids in your mouth at all they mean it. I used to be the one turning people away for not following the goddamn instructions. You vomit into your lungs while you're under and you risk infection and death

I thought that too, mine was around the same time.

I didn't realise that baby could be vaccinated anyway straightaway, cr5-7.

Exactly your body is already fighting something so it won't be able to do what it needs to do with the live virus to make it work the way of should

I'm sure my mum said I had whooping cough as a baby....inconsiderate women ain't around to ask... Surely having it already offers some immunity??
