Now my son has started college we need wifi in our home.

I don't need the phone or TV just the broadband.

Any suggestions on the best deal/provider would be appreciated. Thank you

I could be wrong but assuming you have a landline phone then you may have to take the broadband from them...might also be a simpler thing to do. We use BT and its works really well if that's any help.

BT are the most expensive there is.

The only "plus" is when it goes wrong it's their guys who fix it.

Unless you go cable there isn't a single provider who doesn't come with a phone line.

The only other option is to get a 4G wifi hotspot from the likes of EE.

The cheapest out there right now for phone/BB is EE IF you are already a mobile customer.

£11 pm line rental if you pay up front and £2.50 pm BB. £5pm if you aren't a mobile customer of theirs

I'm happy using my phone and 3G. It's my son that needs it for course work/homework for college.

Don't go with Sky. I've had it in 2 flats in London so far, the service drops regularly.

Sometimes your mobile provider also does broadband. Perhaps ask for a better deal?

He pays £20 for his

Virgin is only one you don't need a phone line . From 50mg to 152mg available and unlimited. There are fair usage for streaming, but never stop you streaming just slows the speed for a period .

I've done this with my phone and wasn't on there no more than hour in total and I was left a week with only 20% mobile usage left.

That way isn't the best option for me. I will get my son to try it.

It's only really worth it if you've unlimited internet (or if you can upgrade to unlimited internet for less than a broadband contract).

We used to be with virgin but it used to regularly drop out at busy periods.

Now with BT, no issues, unlimited broadband, 3 phones, 4 tablets and a pc connected with no problems

so i have a mobile phone 4g to wifi hot spot converter and pay as you go data

i got the wifi converter at tescophone shop and i top up there with a swipe card from EE..if this is all you are using it for, it may work for you, no contract, no landline etc etc xx

We use talk talk. They have some good deals on at the mo. We have the fibre which we pay a bit more for but it's really good.

My advice is don't go for talktalk and try to find out about broadband in your area.

Talktalk convinced me into paying much more than I should have been for a faster service that I then found out isn't yet available in my area! I was paying for a service they could not provide.

On the note of tethering, no matter how unlimited your data allowance tethering is capped to prevent the phone companies losing money on providing home Internet at mobile phone contract prices.

If it's just for your son, you could look into data dongles and USB WiFi hotspots, especially if he has a laptop, he can just plug the data dongle into the USB on his computer, although the USB WiFi hotspots can be useful to share data, but because the data is limited, it would be better just to use it for his work.

If you're sharing the data, just get a line to your house. Apparently plusnet were which best value for money provider for the UK 2013 if memory serves

It's not always capped. It isn't with me on Vodafone, for example.

A few pointers -

You may be able to get cash back, if ordered indirectly via a cash back site such as quidco or topcashback. These sites give cash for a load of different internet purchased stuff, from hotels, flights and any retailer ot business that they're linked with. You still buy the stuff or contract with the virgins, BTs, Tescos of the world but they share the cash commission with you that they receive.

Tethering is often excluded from mobile phone data allowances and they can reserve the right to charge their standard data rates if a customer has tethered their phone data.

Watch out for prohibitively expensive phone line reconnection charges. Ensure that they don't just discuss monthly rentals, as a line activation charge may apply.

The last internet provider I would use is the Post Office followed by BT. BT control the copper wires so if you use that system you will have to have them in your home. One time when my broadband went off it took 9 visits from BT so-called engineers to fix it. If you show the slightest hint of displeasure at the service they will immediately down tools and walk off the job. So, go cable if you can. You will have to take a telephone package and you will be paying probably £20 to £25 per month for the phone and broadband.

that's a surprise, however, my experience of vodafone was not impressive. I think I only got signal 50-70% of the time and it was slower than most other providers I've used. But that was probably an isolated instance because I travelled around the country a fair bit back then, and I used a Blackberry 8500 for that I think, which was not the fastest of phones. Maybe Vodafone users are just more sensible with how they use their tethering hahaha
