Oh sorry haven't been on the forum much today. I thought it must be the new Twitter or something. In answer to your OP, I want to unplug. I hate all the apps, sites and shit linking together to know what I'm doing. I want out of the Matrix.

"More plugging in. I'm always looking to make my life easier and have more control over things like my home. I'm currently working on programming a watering system for my garden, that looks up the weather forecast for the next 24 hours and waters accordingly. It'll also record the amount of rainfall that there has been and make amendments for the next day if it was more than expected. We have a wifi kettle. We can boil it when we get up out of bed, or from the end of the road when we're walking home from the train station. Our computers can be accessed from outside of the house, as can our file storage system (which is in effect our own personal version of Dropbox. I have a device that tells me if my room is in a good state to go to bed - it measures the humidity, the light levels, the noise levels, and the state of the air. It also tracks my sleep throughout the night and records loud noises if they disturb my sleep. It helps me to sleep better because I can track my habits. Technology is powerful. And brilliant. I haven't - but I do seemed to have managed to solve the latest problem after several hours of angst!! I HATE the increasing inter-connectness of stuff - I have different parts to my life and I want to keep them entirely separate, and it's getting harder and harder to maintain.

Now that I have a fully functioning house I am quite happy to take full advantage of what civilisation has to offer. :D I feel like I've earned it!

" I'm glad you're sorted I'm similar, perhaps showing my age but also my aversity to not having stockpiles of information available upon me and all aspects of my life, to whoever may buy or use it. Not really rushing headlong into this trend atm. If my home gets burgled, I don't feel the need to have CCTV call me up and show me who's inside and what they're taking, whilst calling the cops. The plant watering capabilities are nice and I've used drip irrigation systems since I was a child and started gardening on some spare land. OK, it would benefit me and the plants, if weather forecasts were used and I was away, but is that the real benefit to me of the interwebby of all things? I'm not needing the fridge to order some milk, because I'm low: delivery costs would be a bit high anyway for a bit of skimmed milk - and I can keep some UHT around for emergency purposes. There may be some other benefits but my reluctance is a bit of a barrier. My car transmits everything about my driving, where I go, how I drive, alongside a mobile phone which knows who I communicate with and pc how I browse and what for etc.

Nope... the real benefit is when the same computer sends you an email while you're on holiday to tell you that the pipe has burst and it's pissing water everywhere costing you money. So that you can get a plumber to come round and sort it - hopefully costing you less money in the long run. :D

Away from plants, I'm rather averse to it all. Although happy if traffic problems along my route do get communicated and so I can change routes etc.

Away from plants, I'm rather averse to it all. Although happy if traffic problems along my route do get communicated and so I can change routes etc." I went to a very early conference on the IoT (internet of things) and there were two ideas that I fell in love with. The first one was a man who invented a light that glowed different colours according to the energy usage in his home. If it was green it was low usage. If it was red then lots of electricity was being used. It sat in his study upstairs. When the kids went to bed, they checked the light. If the light was glowing anything other than green they knew to go back downstairs and see if they'd left the telly running or the sky box on or anything like that. The other was a set of interconnected lamps for people to use. (They were shaped like cute little houses). The idea is, that I would have a big/master lamp in my house, and give my mum, my dad, my partner, etc, a small child lamp. All the lamps are connected to their respective owners internet connection. When I get up in the morning, I turn my light on and it turns all the mini lights on across the world that are associated with me. When I turn the light off because I've gone to work or gone to bed, all the other lamps turn off. It piqued my interest because we have family in Australia and you never know when they're about to call. And because my Mum is always worried about me getting home ok. The light going on and off shows her that I'm ok and that I'm at home - without her having to call me. I also thought it would be great in poly relationships. If you all had each others little houses, you know when is a good time to call in to the other person, or give them a ring on the phone. The idea being that you only light it up when you can chat with them, perhaps not when you have another partner over.

"Some of the possibilities for municipal type uses of IoT are quite interesting too. Sensors in street lights and on public vehicles which collect data on air quality, traffic conditions, weather conditions, parking availability etc. can all be combined and used to control the flow of traffic by altering lights, for apps to show people where available parking spaces are, for disaster prevention and response in situations like flooding, improving journey time reliability on public transport, real time passenger information and so on. Cities like Dublin are already doing some great stuff around open data and hopefully it will become a lot more commonplace." This is the more attractive kind of thing that I'm positive towards, rather than heavier data collation upon my life. I think Newcastle were trialling some experimental traffic management/flow systems, that I read about some time ago, aiming to keep drivers moving, rather than stop/start traffic in the longer term. I think it was somehow real-time, but not sure how joined up it all was.

We have a good urban traffic management control centre; there have been a few specific projects with ANPR cameras on traffic lights which allow timings to be adjusted according to journey time data captured from vehicles. E.g. it takes a number plate reading at one point and can tell based on how long that same vehicle takes to reach another point what the level of traffic congestion is and if the light sequence should be altered. It's mainly been used to try to improve bus journey time reliability so far, but also with specific events which cause traffic peaks, like the Great North Run, One Direction concert at the Stadium of Light. Early days with it all, like everything now it's sourcing funding to acrually invest in the technology and the ongoing costs - it can be hard to capture the monetary value of the benefits.
