Not me, I'm thankfully too old for all that, but I know it will affect some of you directly as a sufferer or as someone who is indirectly affected through your relationships.

This week is PMS Awareness Week. The theme this year is the misdiagnosis of PMS.

From the NAPS Bulletin:

During this year’s PMS Awareness Week, The National Association for Premenstrual Syndrome (NAPS) is aiming to highlight the frequent misdiagnosis of PMS for bipolar disorder and other psychiatric disorders. Occasionally the opposite happens where a diagnosis of PMS is made even though there is no cyclicity to the symptoms.

Mr Nick Panay, Chairman of NAPS and leading PMS Specialist says:

“It is vital that GPs, gynaecologists and psychiatrists communicate effectively to optimise the understanding and management of their patents with PMS.”

Misdiagnosis results in the inappropriate labelling of patients and use of ineffective treatments. For example, balancing of hormones might be more effective for PMS sufferers than the use of psychoactive drugs. Incorrect treatment leads to avoidable suffering and distress for those seeking effective relief for their PMS symptoms.

Severe PMS/PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) is estimated to affect 800,000 women in the UK with serious implications for their physical, psychological, social and economic wellbeing. NAPS is striving to improve awareness of PMS amongst public and health professionals so as to improve prompt recognition, diagnosis and correct treatment of the condition

NAPS has campaigned vigorously for over thirty years on behalf of PMS sufferers. Much has been achieved but there is still a significant deficit in both understanding and application by some of those upon whom PMS sufferers place their hopes for regaining control of their lives.

Our aim, as ever, in this Awareness Week is to ensure a brighter future for those thousands of women who deserve better.

I suffer badly (I also have endometriosis which is as common as diabetes!!) but luckily I have a wonderful GP & gynae.

A partner from 20 years ago used to describe my PMS as Ready-Mix lorry of shit being dropped on him every month. My weight would change by as much as 7lbs, I wore different bras and clothes before my period and I was always struggling to control my emotions. Fluoxetine helped me.

I am glad all of that is over.

Not a dig at you Dan, but it's a shame it's just regarded as "women's things". Must have a big impact on the families and partners of women who suffer badly, and I'd wager there aren't many men who'd feel comfortable confiding in someone else about the effect it has on them.

It's a pain for all concerned.

Us guys luckily only suffer from occasional bouts of PMSL. And yep - blokes would be as likely to talk about it to their mates/family as ED problems.

The closest I have ever come to feeling properly, clinically depressed was a few days before my period. Followed by an intense high. Then pure rage. I was pretty good at recognising the reasons it was happening and thinking my way through it but I would occasionally let the anger out, which must have been horrible for those around me. Then I started losing weight and my cycle started to get shorter and shorter (and less predictable) as my body changed. I finally went on the mini-pill, which has evened it out somewhat. And I had what I considered mild PMT/PMS.

Citalopram here. Made a huge difference!!! I also have an oestrogen intolerance so can only take a couple of types of contraceptive pill.

I actually can't wait for the menopause - I had one induced when I was 19 & it was brilliant compared to how it has been.

For all those that are diagnosed there must be 1000's that aren't.

I was lucky and never had anything more than the occasional mood swings. feel sorry for women who suffer on a monthly basis.

Part of the issue with the syndrome is that we can all experience it in such different ways. As with pain thresholds, your mild might be severe for someone else.

Mine is all good. Get a little down sometimes but nothing major. Have an ibuprofen and wait til the next month. Major pig out just before too
