I was reading an article by Jerry Hall in which she said that she'd had a lot of doors open for her in her life due to her being beautiful. My first thought (very bitchily I know),was that she must have some kind of magic mirrors in her home. But I ask the question,do we realy live in a society were being beautiful opens doors whilst us lesser mortals get them slammed in our faces? Are we realy that shallow as a society?

Sadly, probably. Watch how long a man holds a door behind him for a woman arriving behind. The longer he's willing to wait, the hotter he thinks she is.

The good news is, everybody's hot to someone...

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think we are programmed very early to think that an accepted external aesthete that is generally called beautiful (dependent on current fashions in some cases) means that we equate that beauty with good and virtuous.

All the baddies tend to ugly to look at (often depicted through disabilities, facial deformities, scarring) and so we grow up thinking that those people should be treated with more caution.

It probably is true and for both sexes if you look at a cross section of the more successful people in any industry they will generally be more attractive due to if all other things are equal the more attractive person will be chosen

It's a huge generalisation obviously

Yes we are. I notice every day that good looking people are treated differently in shops, in offices on here. I'm a fairly ordinary looking woman not a candidate for beauty queen status but not likely to scare the horses and I notice that I'm treated differently (preferentially) by people in certain circumstances, especially by men so if I was a stunning beauty then yes, I imagine it would open doors.

Nah they aren't

I'm not beautiful and I don't aspire to be so

I'm prefectly happy being Mrs Joe Average I also get a sence of satisfaction knowing I've worked hard for everything I have

Maybe if I was beautiful and rich for nothing more than my looks I'd feel different but for now I'm content

Oh and Jerry Hall is beautiful because she believes herself to be and that is a good thing.

People, animals, have always tried to make themselves attractive to the opposite sex, some show of part of their anatomy some wear makeup, if your truelly beautiful/handsome you will get benefits, the same as if you have high intelligence or a talent. If you've been given something then why not use it to your advantage.

Mmm..I found her remark to be a bit arrogant actually.Maybe I was raised to be more modest!(or more to the fact I'm more critical of myself!)

Yes lots of people find self confidence arrogant. There are many threads on here in which women (and men) talk about being average, punching above their weight or people being out of their league which is very sad. Jerry Hall looks in the mirror and sees beauty, bloody good on her.

It's prevalent thought the animal kingdom. Selection of the fastest, fittest, strongest and such like.

Sometimes we forget that as a species, we are still governed by basic animal urges.

Thank goodness humans are no longer selected on speed I'd have been bumped off years ago

I see the comment as her acknowledging something: her looks have opened doors for her. Nothing more than that. She was a model.

Your objection seems to be that she is wrong to even refer to herself as beautiful. It's probably a bit American for me but she has built her career on projecting beauty and with that she acknowledges her beauty.

Confidence can come across as arrogance I agree. I do think that we should be encouraging people to see the beauty in themselves instead of this depressing culture we have of claiming to be plain.

If as a child you grew up with Walt Disney films, there's a perfect example of social conditioning

Just the descriptions in fairy tales will do it but add the illustrations and you cement the idea. Make it into a film and you add an extra layer of reinforcement.

Jerry generally seems to be a lovely person too. It will have helped her.

All of us here have gained due to our attractiveness, some more than others.

We can try to go against the flow but our predispositions are tough nuts to crack.

I agree with her, and i think the reason why is because people enjoy it when they manage to catch the attention of good looking people.

Being innocent looking is a good one as well. You can get up to all kinds of stuff and nobody thinks your capable. I was a little shit at school and used to mess about in class loads (was bored), i was never the one to be sent out of class though, it was always the person i was doing stuff with. Took them ages to twig on but they did eventually.

It's true.

There's actually been several studies done.

More likely to get a job, be found not guilty, get elected, be promoted, be treated favourably by drs etc.

It's not right but its what happens.

Actually the same thing happens with tall people think it was on something like QI that I heard that 80% of Fortune 500 CEOs are over 6'3"

Plucking that out from the darkest recess of my mind but you get the idea

I would think it probably opens some doors but closes others. We all make assumptions about each other based on our perception of how they look; positive and negative.
