Does warm water freeze faster

than cold water outside? I keep clearing out the ice from the birds water and filling it with warm water but I'm sure I heard that this freezes faster than cold. Does anyone know? Z

Yes it does, I think its called the mpemba effect or something like that.

It will not freeze faster if it is near boiling point but if it's near 70C it's more likely to freeze faster, it's all to do with less mass and disolved gas etc in the water.......as far as I remember from science lol

We had several bottles of water stood outside in the back yard.

Some bottles contained soda water and the others contained carbonated mineral water.

The soda water froze solid, but the mineral water remained liquid

Put a floating ball in the bird bath (I guess a little rubber ducky would be fun too... um...)

The wind or breeze then blows it about on the surface and is meant to prevent ice from forming?

I think I heard that somewhere once?

That's because of the mineral content in the water....it contained salt and lowered the freezing point of the mineral water compared to the soda water

No, it needs to be kept around 50 degrees any lower and it's less affective....it explodes at around 420f

Having just conducted an experiment by putting out a bucket of cold water and a bucket of hot water and watched them closely for over 2 hours, I can categorically confirm that I couldn't give a toss anymore because I'm bloody frozen!!
