Are you smiling?

There's a lot to smile about, if you focus attention. But I see profiles where it may as well have been taken in a morgue.

So this is the help each other thread, if you like? No one to help you relax and take your pics, you're stiff, straining doing a selfie shot?

Profile pics with smiles are very much more alluring. You may even get verified if the photographer is agreeable.

Do you agree and find a solemn face less interesting than a relaxed or smiling one?

Would you be willing to take some shots for someone?

You're right, the unsmiling, miserable looking selfies and mugshot looks are truly horrific to look at.

We're much more inclined to respond positively to a smiley face.

And yes, happy to photograph anybody. It's my everyday job.

"i look a bit of an idiot when forcing a smile for a picture, especially of i am concentrating on pressing the button too "

Tip: When top models are getting their pic taken they press their tongue against the back of their teeth, this tricks the brain into concentrating on this spot allowing the rest of the face muscles to relax

I've always thought the sexiest thing anyone can wear is a smile.

I often see an otherwise sexy picture ruined by a humourless dead pan or a contrived pout and wonder, "why?... what's the harm in a smile?"

On the other hand, as a single male here, "even smiling makes my face hurt" after too long (apologies to Frankie).

I think if someone else is taking the pic you can relax and be natural. Forced smiles for pics are different.

My warning is that I can take ages to take pics. Also one pic shouldn't be expected to be perfect or enough. For me it's part of my creativity- all my photography- as well as interest in people, if doing people shots.

"I look like I'm having my mug shot taken for prison if I don't smile. "

I'm guessing you would if you were relaxing in good company and photos were a secondary aspect to the interaction?

Maybe semi-secret cameras could help too.

I can't help but smile in a selfie as I think I look like a complete pillock when I try to do the whole smouldering sexy look

I agree sweetie. Even if you're not aware consciously, a smiling openness has got to be more inviting.

Your pics are generally great, I think maybe just one without your cheeky smile. Top marks.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

We're programmed to respond to smiling. Look at how we all coo at a baby at their first smile. They are just copying what they see but we then reinforce it with that encouraging happy coo.

The tip I was given to take a relaxed, smiley picture is to put on a big, outrageously fake laugh and keep it going for a few seconds. Snap the picture towards the end of that or just as you finish and your face is relaxed and the smile is still there.

Every time I attempt to smile in photos, my face seems to look scrunched up. I don't like it. So most of my pics are sans smile. Doesn't mean I don't smile a lot in real life though

You should do well. Good photos, good profile and you appear to be here for fun and not because of some existential crisis.

Some people look better moody, moody not miserable though.

There was that one guy here asking opinions on his profile and he wasn't smiling, he put a smile pic up and couldn't believe it was the same guy.

Was it an improvement?

Some people carry serious looks very well but I'm a sucker for smiles.

...Up on the Downs

I simply cannot smile on command, so I do empathise with dour selfies, though I would never use one. That's why I put my ice ream shot up - there's a bit of a true smiley laugh in there. But the only face pics I have other people took.

I can't smile on command for photos, it just looks wrong. The only smiley photos I have which I like are ones where I've been caught unawares.

I think posed on command smiles aren't as good as those when we're natural and relaxed. I'm similar Ruby, my artificial ones make me cringe and I don't like them or use them.

It's half 6 on a Monday morning, I've been dragged out of a warm comfy bed and now I've got to sit in an hours crawl through the M6 traffic- I'm not feeling very 'smiley'

May I politely suggest not to take your face pics at such moments.
