Where does the word pussy come from

No cat related statements ...........

Who thought of this term for a womans vagina. Is it the Americans. Is it because originally the majority of women had a bush down below and it resembled a cat in some way.

Everyone seems to be using it now. I used to hate it, but in the absence of calling it anything else, apart from lady bits, its the best of a bad bunch. Vagina is too medical.

Ooh Ooh I know the answer to this, courtesy of the History channel of all places

It comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Pousse which used to mean pouch or bag. Search wikipaedia, I'm sure they will have the full explanation.

i hate the word pussy, i feel odd saying it :S i even prefer the C word but not many people like that so i dont say it

slang for "female pudenda," 1879, but probably older, puss "pocket, pouch" but perhaps instead from the cat word a notion of "soft, warm, furry thing;" Or something like that, probably but what the fuck do I know.

SDM . It's not often you and i disagree but NO one ..... NO ONE ....... NOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOONEEEEEEE has a fanny that looks like the thing that hugged faces in Alien....... god man you go with some strange women

The use of the word pussy for the vulva is documented as early as 1583. Originally the word was probably "puss" another word for "pouch". Referring to the shape. Back then it was a nicer and less vulgar way of saying vulva. In 1852 the term was also used as a term of endearment. So it wasn't specifically vulgar at that time. A husband could lovingly call his wife "pussy" at that time.

The medieval French word pucelle referred to a young adolescent girl or a virgin, although this comes from a slang term for virginity puce (= flea) rather than referring to cats (but cf. Philip Stubbs, an English pamphleteer, wrote in his 1583 book "The Anatomie of Abuses" that "the word pussie is now used of a woman".

It has been informally suggested in folk etymology that it is a shortened form of the word "pusillanimous" which is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "showing a lack of courage or determination" or cowardly. This meaning would seem to be consistent with the intention of the word "pussy" when used as an insult toward a man. This term, however, comes from the Latin words pusillus (petty) and animus (spirit) and is unrelated to the Germanic derivations of puss and pussy.

It may well be from an ancient language but it always makes me think of Yankee porn films. R
